Yes! You Can Wear Bodycon!

Bodycon has been a style that has been popular since the late 1980’s, when Amazonian like supermodels such as Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell seemed to pour their perfect bodies into very unforgiving dresses, and the rest of us mere mortals watched and wept, hoping that this trend disappeared very soon in favour of something more flattering. Herve Leger and Azzadine Alaia were kings of this trend, and Robert Palmer had a video full of models/musicians in bodycon with a red slash of lipstick and slicked back hair. It was a sexy look for sure, but for many of us it was one that was best avoided.

Bu that was then. Now things are a little different. Self love and confidence means women wear what they like, rather than what they are told to wear, and we now love our curves, and our bodies with all their lumps and bumps – we don’t have to conform to someone else’s idea of beautiful. If we want to wear something, then we will, and that applies to bodycon. Femme Luxe, the fashion-forward brand best known for its comfy Co Ord Sets and grey loungewear f0r those lazy days, are this Summer turning their attention to more slinky styles. They are tackling the body con dress in a range of styles and colours, with their collection of  the bodycon midi dress being a real Summer winner.

The Salma white strapless ruched midi dress is the ultimate Summer bodycon dress, and it defies all the rules. This is the ultimate statement dress in a slinky fabric that feels lovely against the skin, it has elastication around the  top of the dress that ensures it stays in place and you don’t have any embarrassing dress malfunctions. The dress is over the knee midi style, so it adheres to those rules around legs of boobs, but not both, and the ruching adds detail and interest so this doesn’t just look like a tube dress.

This is a dress that is far more flattering than would first appear. This is due to the ruching detailing that goes around the dress, and helps to disguise areas like your tummy and hips. I hold my weight on my stomach area, but this feels like it pulls you in, and then hides the bumps with the clever ruching. The fact that it has a midi length actually makes you feel more covered than you would expect too.

How to wear this?

The beauty of white as a colour choice is that it pretty much goes with any other colour, from neutrals, to pastels, and primary brights, so it is really up to you. If you were planning to take this dress on your holidays, it would be brilliant with silver or gold metallic accessories – sandals, a clutch bag, chunky 80’s style jewellery would all work well with this. I chose to wear this with more neutral accessories, camel Jimmy Choo heels picked up in a charity shop, an iconic Kensington bag from Kurt Geiger that I found on Vinted, and minimal jewellery all found in charity shops.

One tip I would give when it comes to wearing this dress is that you need to think carefully about your underwear. The dress is very slightly see thru, so nude coloured underwear totally works best, as does a structured strapless bra to give you both the best shape and best support when wearing it. The addition of a shrug would also be great if you are conscious about the tops of your arms, an area many women hate with a passion, or you could add a denim jacket or a scarf on a cooler night.
