Alexander McQueen at Paris Fashion Week-Fit for a Princess?

The Alexander McQueen A/W 2011 show at Paris Fashion week was even more anticipated than usual, following  frenzied speculation that Sarah Burton may be the designer of the wedding dress of the decade. Although there had been denials by the House of McQueen, news that Vogue editor Alexandra Schulman had personally recommended that Kate Middleton wear a dress by Burton adds weight to the speculation about who will design that dress.

But what of the new collection? The excited buzz all over Twitter was that there was quite a lot of white in this collection. Beautiful evening dresses with lots of ruffles and feathers evoking images of romance and opulence were a theme of the collection, the sort of dresses that are meant to be swished and fluttered. There were also white coats that had a Russian Princess feel to them, worn with laced up skating style boots. I couldn’t help but think of Narnia,and in  particular Tilda Swinton, although there was a touch of swan worship about them too.

But don’t think that this collection was just about white romance and innocence. There were  amazing black feathered fur coats that Daphne Guinness was just born to wear.  There were also touches of bondage that counterbalanced the white innocence, with dresses attached to collars that seemed to be made for a dog lead. The black and white lace up dress was more Ann Summers than Kate Middleton.

My personal favourite look was probably the simplest. The strapless shift dress seemed like a departure, less flamboyant than the feathered,ruffled creations, but I just loved the clean lines of this look. And maybe, with a matching short jacket, this would be a perfect outfit for a princess!
