Marilyn Monroe 100

You may have noticed a slow of documentaries and film showings dedicated to the iconic Marilyn Monroe over the past week. There was Marilyn and the Mob on Channel 4, a four part documentary on BBC Four, showings of Some Like it Hot and My Week with Marilyn along with documentaries about those two films. The reason for this slew of Monroe screenings is that, today, the forever young movie goddess would’ve been 100.

It is hard to think of an old Marilyn, but she was actually born in the same year as Queen Elizabeth ll, who she famously met in 1956. She was a child of the roaring 20s, born in 1926, and died, supposedly by her own hand, in August 1962. However, despite that early death, she has never really gone away. She is everywhere in popular culture, and a stunning new book from ACC Art Books,  the only official commemorative book, in association with the Marilyn Monroe estate, shows just why she is as iconic, and important as ever.

This really is the most beautiful book you will find dedicated to Marilyn. It is an oversized volume, a really coffee table book, and features a spectacular digitally remastered cover printed with gold details, gold page edges, spot gold in the interior, and several gatefolds. From the cover, it makes a real statement.

Marilyn was photographed and courted by the very best photographers of the 1950s and 1960s, and this book is chock full of stunning, full colour images. There are early cheesecake pin ups, but also photographs by the masters Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Eve Arnold, Milton Greene, Cartier Bresson and many more.

There are also quotes from the lady herself. She was so much more than her dumb blonde image, so it is good to hear her true voice coming through.

If you are a Marilyn Monroe fan, you really need this book in your collection. Many books claim to be the definitive story, but this truly is that. A celebration of a beautiful and talented woman, one who was complex and often misunderstood, but one who continues to bring joy to millions, every single day.
