Reviewed: Navy Midi Smock Dress From High Street Outlet

British Summertime eh! One minute, you’re basking in 34 degree heat on the beach, the next you’re dithering in your sundress and trying to find shelter from the wind and rain. And sometimes, this is all in the same day. No wonder Summer dressing for this years staycations are so difficult, you have to think of all eventualities.

The NAVY MIDI SMOCK DRESS from High Street Outlet is a dress that you can easily wear, whatever the weather. From the Italian collection, the dress is made from 100% viscose, which makes it cool and comfortable to wear, and has a loose fit, which means it won’t cling if the day is warm, or turns warmer as it goes on. But it will also work on those cooler, Summer days, days when you want something with sleeves, or a slightly longer length, and the darks shade of the blue floral print means it will work in your wardrobe when Autumn arrives, just add some tights and a scarf and you can wear this until Winter comes.

Smock dresses are so forgiving, like their sisters the buffet dress, a smock dress allows for an extra cake, or a dinnertime blow out, or just that time of the month bloating. The beauty of it is that you can add a belt if you want to change the look, or just leave it to flow. This one has a sort of tiered detail, with an empire line that falls below the bust, so it isn’t totally shapeless. The V neckline is also flattering, giving a glimpse of some skin without cleavage overload.

The floral print is eye catching, with flowers in a different shade of blue, and the sleeves are super pretty, with a straight design that turns into a bell shaped detailing at the elbow. The dress is one size which would fit a 10-20, and, as already mentioned, it could be worn belted to create a different look, or even left open and worn over jeans and a vest for a completely different look.

How to accessorise? I wore my dress with espadrilles, but sandals, maybe with a wedge heel, would also work pretty well. I added a yellow summer scarf from Linea to add a colour pop, red work work equally well. My bag added a third shade of blue to the mix – I added a large tote, but think a smaller cross body bag could also work and would help add shape to the dress.
