Royal Wedding – best dressed guests.

The Royal wedding was a perfect excuse for fashion watching. I got up really early to watch the guests arrive in all their sartorial splendour, and I wasn’t disappointed. The wedding guest style had everything, from the brights of Joss Stone and Tara Palmer Tompkinson, the Phillip Treacy hats that gave more than a passing glance to the style of the late Isabella Blow, the surprising elegance of Camilla Parker Bowles, and the extraordinary outfit choices of the Princesses of York. Here are my favourite outfits of the day, along with a few that may not become trendsetting.

Ageless style

Camilla Parker Bowles wore a beautiful Anna Valentine coat/dress. This was a great outfit for her – minimally styled, flattering with its box pleats, with just a touch of embroidered detail on the hips. It was teamed with a Philip Treacy hat and was the perfect choice for the Stepmother of the Groom.

Carole Middleton. Wearing a beautiful Catherine Walker coat in a lovely grey/blue shade, with a jewelled buckle at its centre, this was a Diana-like silhouette from the house of the Princess of Wales favourite designer, who died last year. Carole looked regal and oh so elegant in this outfit.

Young Royals

Sophie Winkleman, aka the actress wife of Lord Freddie Windsor looked effortlessly chic in an outfit designed for her by Armani. The wide saucer style hat was reminiscent of the style worn by Audrey Hepburn in the 1950s and looked beautiful with her navy outfit.

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie added the fun to the proceedings. I loved Beatrice’s Valentino nude coloured coat, but the outlandish Philip Treacy hat did remind me of a prawn, still you have to admire the fun with fashion attitude she bought to the proceedings. Eugenie’s 18th century style Vivienne Westwood outfit was glorious, but not all that flattering to her figure, although I loved the Garrows Law style hat.

Zara Phillips, soon to be a royal bride herself when she marries Mike Tindall in the summer, was another wedding hit. She chose the metallic look in a Paul Costelloe coat dress teamed with another statement hat. The bow at the back of the coat was a neat touch, but did remind me of a 1980s royal bride who loved bows too. (Fergie, for those too young to remember..)

Stylish VIPS  and Dignitaries

Victoria Beckham proved that being 6 months pregnant doesn’t mean you can’t be amongst the most glamorous of the VIP guests at a royal wedding! Wearing a navy sack style dress from her own collection that was flattering and comfortable over her bump, she also opted for Phillip Treacy headwear, with a pill-box style hat perched on the front of her head. I loved her look, my only criticism being the extremely high Louboutins that slightly resembled stripper shoes!

Tara Palmer Tompkinson has received lots of criticism for her blue outfit. True it was flamboyant, and yes, the gloves were a touch too much, but I loved the drama of the Deborah Milner dress and the..yes, you’ve guessed it…Phillip Treacy hat. Her Nicholas Kirkwood heels alone had me drooling.  I also liked the simplicity and old school glamour of her sister, Santa Sebag-Montefiore in Dior, with a stunning Rose hat.

Another guest whose outfit faced criticism was Samantha Cameron, who wore a jade Burberry ruched dress for the occasion. She was criticised for not wearing a hat, but I think her beautiful dress, teamed with an amazing statement necklace was perfect. She stood out amongst the sea of Philip Treacy headgear.

Chelsy Davy was low-key and disappointing. There was nothing really wrong with her Alberta Ferretti suit,although the lining did keep appearing at the bottom of the skirt, but this just felt to old for such a young girl. The hat was just too flat and her hair needed perking up. My sister quipped on seeing this outfit ‘..If Kate is the new Diana, then Chelsy is the new Fergie!’

European Royalty turn on the style

Charlene Wittstock, soon to be the wife of Prince Albert of Monaco, showed all the style of his mother Princess Grace in her dove grey coat from Akris. Blonde and beautiful, she showed such style that I am truly looking forward to seeing what she wears on her big day.

Princess Letizia of Spain just looked so pretty in her rose-coloured embroidered dress designed by Felipe Varela. I also loved her hat, which reminded me of the styles worn by the Queen Mother in her younger days.

Crown Princess Marie-Chantel of Greece wore a beautiful pearl grey dress from Chanel that was covered in intricate embroidery. I loved her grey strappy shoes and her fabulous headwear that looked even better when viewed from the side.
