Sophie Ellis Bextor Brings In 2025

BBC have become synonymous with music stars ringing in the new year. Whether it be Jools Holland and his now legendary Hootenanny lighting up BBC2, or a selected music star in a specially broadcast concert on BBC1, television on New Year’s Eve is about music. This year, it was Sophie Ellis Bextor, fresh from a stellar year off the back of a certain song appearing in a certain movie, who bought the glitter and glamour and the sounds of the Kitchen Disco as we said goodbye to 2024.

I’m a huge fan of Sophie, and her particular brand of retro disco. I’ve only seen her live once, during her Groovejet days at a Summer festival, but would definitely like to see her again as she is just glamour and style personified. From the opening strains of ‘Crying at the Discotheque’ it was clear that Sophie was just the perfect person to bring in a new year. Her show was glittery and efferversant, and she had the perfect song choices, from her own, now iconic, ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ (thanks to that closing scene in Saltburn), to a blistering version of Madonna’s Like a Prayer.

She also had some very special guests, including a glorious Jessie Ware, with who she duetted on Baccara’s Yes sir, I can Boogie’ (my favourite moment of the show). Scissor Sister’s Jake Shears was another guest, bringing the classics ‘Take your mamma’ and ‘Filthy Gorgeous’ to light up the show.

Everything about this show was glorious and perfect for a night when you should be enjoying a glass of fizz in your most sparkly outfit. The setting was just gorgeous, and Sophie herself, as ever, looked incredible in two outfits that showed off her own, inimitable style.  I loved the Sam Ryder show from last New Year, but think Sophie, and her great choice of back catalogue favourites and classic covers, even topped that.

Here’s to 2025 bringing all the glitz and glamour. Happy New Year!
