A guide for what to look for in a suit.

For most men, one of the most important things you will ever buy is a smart, formal suit. You may choose to buy one for any number of reasons. You may be attending a wedding, Christening or funeral. You may be going for an important job interview. Or it might be your first day in that dream job and you want to look your absolute best. Whatever the reason for buying that suit, such an expensive purchase needs to be absolutely perfect as you will probably be calling on it for years.

But suits can also be a bit of a minefield. The fit is super important. To be smart it needs to be fitted. By this I mean not too tight unless you are aiming for a ‘mod’ look, but also not baggy either. This will just look slovenly and untidy. The fit should be comfortable – can you move those elbows and knees, and it must allow you to sit down without the threat of tearing when you take a seat (we’ve all seen funny comedies when this happens, and lets not forget Pep Guardiola here).

There are lots of tips for what to look for when choosing a suit and the right accessories in the infographic I have featured below. It is published by dobell, the UK’s No. 1 Suiting Store (formally called MyTuxedo) and is full of really good advice linked to sizing and cut, the right ties to match your look and even a guide to lapel length.

For me, the most useful part concerns the right shoe colours for the suit depending on the colour of the suit. How often has a beautiful suit been spoiled by the wearing of totally wrong shoes? I’m talking that black suit/brown shoes combination that always brings a sharp intake of breath. This guide shows you the colours that work well together.

So whether you are a man buying a new suit, a teenager picking your first suit, or a lady buying a suit for that special man in your life, this guide is really useful to bookmark, or print out and take with you.

Ahead of The Baftas – A focus on men’s tailoring

Sunday night we see the glossiest, most glamorous night of the year in television. Yes, it is the Bafta television awards, and this year the ceremony has been sponsored by House of Fraser. In honour of the ceremony, this post is dedicated to some of the best in red carpet dressing, with a focus on some of the best looks in menswear.

It is hard for men to shine on the red carpet when we are faced with a series of show stopping looks from the ladies. But it has to be said, a sharp suit or tuxedo can make a real impact, especially when worn by a celebrity better known for more casual styling. House of Fraser will be dressing nominees, so we are sure to see some really suave looks on the night.

My favourite red carpet dresser is gorgeous George himself. Mr Clooney is never less than perfect, the epitome of an old school matinee idol. He sticks to traditional red carpet formal dressing, but it works and he often outshines every other man in the vicinity.

Of course, for us mere mortals, walking a red carpet is not something that we have that much opportunity to do. But formal pieces can be added to more casual looks to smarten them up, either for an evening out at the theatre or a restaurant, even just a trip to the pub.

We were sent a formal shirt from House of Fraser’s extensive range with the objective of using the piece to add finesse to a casual outfit. We chose a fabulous black shirt from the Ted Baker collection. This has a tapered back and is a semi fitted style, with a particularly lovely pattern on the lining. The shirt is classic fit, single cuff style and is most definitely a formal shirt, one which would look fabulous worn under a suit, or with a waistcoat over the top. So how would it look with smart jeans – smart enough for a night at the theatre maybe?

I think that this shirt works really well for a smart, but not overly formal look. The regular collar can be left open to add a more casual feel, but you know that this would be great with a tie too. Jeans and desert boots keep the mood casual, but the versatility of this shirt means you could add formal trousers and shoes and this would also work.

Love the pattern in the collar.

It is December, and that means we are well and truly entering Winter. Snow may not be here yet, but the mornings are cold and frosty, nights see the temperature dropping drastically and there have already been a few days when the mercury has hardly risen above that zero. This is the perfect time to take a look at your Winter wardrobe to make sure you have the key pieces that will help you survive the Winter freeze. A good coat, lots of chunky knits, shoes or boots with a sensible grip and a cute and warm hat are all vital pieces when the temperatures plummet. And the same rules apply to the man in your life and his wardrobe.

Repertoire Fashion is a great website where you can find a host of your favourite brands for both yourself and your other half. Armani jeans, Ted Baker, Diesel and Sonia Rykiel are just some of the brands you will find, and the site also has a very large collection from Barbour.
