Style Icons of the month February – Rihanna and Adele

This is the first month where I’ve felt the need to add an ‘s’ to Icon, because this month was dominated by two ladies who require no surname, Adele and Rihanna. Other than the lack of surnames, these ladies don’t really have that much in common musically or stylewise, but they do have the knack of turning all eyes towards them when they walk the red carpet. And each has been rocking some seriously retro style this month, with Rihanna channelling Studio 54 glamour with a touch of Michelle Pfeiffer circa Scarface, whilst Adele shows she is the natural descendant of 1940s era Rita Hayworth with soft waves and shimmering…

    Whitney Houston – 1963-2012

And so, once again, that which the God’s give, they take away. This could never be more true than in the death of Whitney Houston, a goddess of a woman with the true voice of an angel who has died at the age of 48. I loved Whitney from those early days of ‘Saving all my love for you’, a song I still belt out when home alone. She was frankly the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. An ex model, she was a cleaner and classier alternative to Madonna, and had a voice that was powerful, melodic and could bring you to tears. Who hasn’t danced at a…

Fabulous Florence opens the Harrods Sale

I am slightly obsessed with Florence Welch. I often find myself musing on whether she came to us through some time travelling portal. Did she slip in via some 1970s Ossie Clark/Thea Porter time travel wardrobe, swathed in hippy goddess threads and long Titian hair? Maybe. Or maybe she was a long lost star of the 1930s, an Art Deco goddess in the style of almost forgotten actresses  like Kay Francis and Eleanor Powell, waltzing around in swathes of bias cut silk and furs, emoting elegant suffering at the hands of Cary Grant and Ronald Coleman. After seeing the glamorous star opening the Harrods sale today, I’m inclined to think the…

VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul -The Best Dressed.

The VH1 Divas event always promises some interesting looks as the best and brightest ladies in music come together for one very special evening. Jesse J, Jennifer Hudson and Dolly Parton were at the event, but non of these lovely ladies made Fashion-Mommy’s best dressed list. Here are the ladies who caught my eye on the night. Florence Welch Choosing a fabulous vintage style dress from Antonio Berardi, Florence again played up that alabaster colouring and Titian locks by opting for a nude shade. Florence continues to impress me with her style which avoids conventions of sexiness, instead creating an ethereal Titania like goddess. Another lady who opted for…

Style Icon of the month – Lana Del Rey

Maybe she is a recreation, with newly inflated lips and a retro image. Frankly I don’t care. She has the most amazing voice and in Video Games, one of the best songs and videos of the year. She also has truly incredible personal style. I am of course talking about Lana Del Rey, who is my style icon for the month of November. Lana has an old-fashioned film starlet feel. Huge eyes and the most talked about lips of the moment are teamed with Brigitte Bardot/Claudia Cardinale lustrous hair. And then there’s the clothes. Lana describes herself as a ‘gangsta Nancy Sinatra’ and could well be her best judge. Her…
