Floral Embellished Skater Dress from Lovedrobe

There are some dresses that make you feel like a princess when you wear them. Really beautiful, romantic dresses with embellishment and beading, the sort of pretty floaty gowns that you can see a celebrity wearing for a red carpet event. The floral embellished Skater Dress from Lovedrobe is just one of those dresses. It would be a wonderful pick for a special event – a party, a prom or a wedding, but it is also very easy and comfortable to wear. To put it simply, I adore this dress.

This is a truly beautiful dress. The bodice is heavily embellished with decorative floral beading and sequins in gold and silver, this contrasts beautifully against the nude colour of the dress. The beading also extends to the sleeves, but because the skirt is plain it avoids looking like something from Dynasty – sometimes the worry with heavy beading, when the look you are aiming for is classy not cabaret.

The skirt is a beautifully floaty chiffon, but with a thicker underlayer to give the skirt a slight skater shape. There are also soft pleats coming from the waistband that again help to create an illusion of shape, rather than allowing the dress just to drop. The skirt is knee length on me, preferable to the shorter skater styles in my opinion. (The dress is 40inches in length).

The dress fastens with a zip up the back that leads to a slight V back detail. As the embellishment also continues around to the back of the dress I think you need to keep accessories and jewellery to an absolute minimum. I teamed it with rose gold shoes and although I would love to ditch the tights, the weather just wasn’t warm enough to do this.  I left off all jewellery, and would add a very plain clutch bag to finish this look.

I cannot rave about this dress enough, the style, shape and colour all worked perfectly for me, and I think it proves that skater styles are not just for the teenage market.

High Street Outlet Joanna Occasion Party Dress

High Street Outlet is one of my most visited websites. I love great quality High Street pieces, and totally love a bargain, so it stands to reason that I would love a site that offers up to 70% off the recommended retail price. The website has new lines added every week, with warm winter coats being added at the moment, so this is not just a site where you can pick up a bargain to put away until next summer, you can buy things that you can actually wear now.

I am lucky enough to have a lovely relationship with High Street Outlet where they often send me clothes to test drive and review. Most recently I was sent a truly stunning, versatile dress, the EX Kaliko Ladies Womens Mauve Purple Black Joanna Occasion Party Dress. This is a perfect Autumn dress, the fabric is double layer, with a stretchy underlayer in black, and then a purple printed floral layer that is almost like chiffon. The dress is semi fitted, and has a ruched panel at the side with a kind of draped detail. This is great if you have a larger tummy area, as the ruching draws the eyes away from the stomach.

This dress is very elegant, and can easily switch between being a day dress to a dress suitable for evening occasions. The chiffon style fabric gives it a dressed up edge, but add a smart black blazer and this will take you easily into a work meeting. The fact it has sleeves also ticks a lot of boxes – making it a warmer option for Autumn, great for those who want to cover their upper arms, and also more demure for those occasions when flashing the flesh just isn’t an option.

I have worn this dress for Sunday Lunch, and also for a night at the Theatre. It is a dress that can easily take you from day to night, and one which also looks great with tights – a great point with winter on it’s way. And, if you still need persuading that this is a dress that your wardrobe needs, did I mention it now costs just £9.99. Yes, you heard right, this stunning dress is less than £10 and is available in sizes 8-18.

Reviewed – The Becky Dress from Studio 8

A new fashion collection was launched in the Summer that had all plus size fashionistas clapping their hands with glee. Studio 8 is derived from Phase Eight, one of the most stylish brands on the High Street (and certainly one of my favourites) and it offers the same high quality design, stunning prints and fabrics, but now in sizes that go up to a size 24. The first collection offers everything from smart work wear, casual weekend pieces, and stunning evening wear and is just full of beautiful, wearable clothes.

Studio 8 contacted me about reviewing the Becky dress. This is a beautiful piece, a slightly over the knee style, with a v neckline and soft digital floral print. It also comes in one of my favourite fabrics, the scuba style that seems to put everything in place and hold it there. Studio 8 describes the dress as:-

“…A modern way to wear florals. Colourful digital print flowers decorate this vibrant scuba dress, with a soft v-shaped neckline, wide pleats at the skirt and a concealed centre back zip. In a contemporary cut, with the hem designed to fall below the knee…”

I loved this dress on first view, the print is stunning – actually far more beautiful in the flesh than the picture suggests. The colours including pinks and blues suggest Monet art, and it is quite easy to team with a range of different colours. The fit is perfect – I wore a size 18 and can get this on without pulling down the zip (useful if there is no-one to do it back up again), whilst the fabric is not too heavy, even with the lining. The dress fits so beautifully – it nips in at the waist and then flares out retro 1950s style. You just feel so feminine wearing it.

I have already worn this dress twice for two special occasions. The first was when we were guests of the Blackpool Tower Circus in the Royal Box. It was a lovely night, but a little breezy on the sea front, so I added tights and Mary Jane style shoes that I think added to the vintage feel of the dress.

This weekend saw Style Birmingham Live, one of the biggest events on Birmingham’s fashion calender. I wore the dress again, but as it was a beautiful Autumn day, I opted for kitten heel sling backs in cobalt and a silver Joanna Hope bag from Marisota. The dress received lots of lovely comments and was really comfortable to wear due to the stretch of the fabric.

I know this dress will work straight into the festive season, I have already tried it with a black jacket as a cover-up for cooler nights, and started Stye Birmingham by adding a faded denim jacket which dressed the outfit down slightly.
