Style Focus – Adele

I don’t mind admitting that I’m a little obsessed with Adele at the moment. Hello is an absolute belter of a song, one I keep singing in my kitchen. (Well, at least attempting to sing, I’m more Oh! hell than Adele.) She’s breaking records left, right and centre, and seems to be totally comfortable in her own skin. And, she does all that and looks totally incredible, a complete icon of beauty and style. As I said, I’m obsessed.

I honestly believe that if Adele wasn’t plus size, all those titles and comments about being the most beautiful woman in the world would be directed in her direction. As it is, she is a total poster girl for the fact that beauty does not have to mean size eight and skinny, but can be a completely different package altogether. And her style, shining in the likes of British designers like Jenny Packham (as she did on the Graham Norton show) is impeccable. She has taken all the best bits of retro 1960s glamour and beauty, the big hair a la Nancy Sinatra, the thick lashes a la Claudia Cardinale, and have turned this into 21st style.

I love the fact she, like an early Angelina Jolie, favours black above all other colours. You get the feeling that this has nothing to do with it being ‘flattering’, and everything to do with the fact that it is dramatic, and looks amazing against her glorious red hair. Off duty, she is effortlessy chic, making choices that combine the practical with the drop dead gorgeous. She is, quite simply, a goddess, and literally makes all the other ‘pop’ poppets look a little bit obvious and trying too hard. If you need any further evidence, just check out the gallery of photographs below. She is utter perfection and a super talent too.

Christmas Glamour from Phase Eight & Studio 8

When it comes to glamorous occasion dressing, Phase Eight can always be relied upon. And now, Sister brand Studio 8 is also continuing the good work, with beautiful pieces that go up to size 24. With Christmas less than 40 days away, this post is dedicated to pieces that can be worn over the Christmas period, from Christmas day celebrations, to partying the night away on New Year’s Eve.

But this post does come with a difference. Regular readers of this blog will know that I am obsessed with dresses, and that when it comes to evening wear, I always step towards the dress rail. This post, however, does not contain a single dress. There are beautiful skirts that can be teamed with sparkly tops of soft knit jumpers, tops of the sheer, glittering and fringed kind, and faux fur jackets that you can wear just about everywhere.

And then there are jumpsuits. It seems hard now to remember when these items were just bad fashion relics from  Sheena Easton, Kelly Marie and the year 1980. These days you be hard pushed to find a party where at least three women aren’t wearing one. I get this totally, they’re comfortable, sexier than a maxi skirt and yet cover the legs for those who hate this part of their body. Going to the toilet is still a hassle, but it’s a small part to play, especially when the jumpsuits are as amazing as Studio 8’s Helen design.

Style Birmingham Live 2015 – fashion fun in Brum

Last weekend saw all the glamorous people flock to Birmingham for Style Birmingham Live 2015. Held in the Gas Hall of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, shows took place over the Saturday and Sunday and featured a range of outfits put together using the best of the Birmingham’s High Street and Independent names. The show was also a showcase for the newly opened John Lewis, who opened the show, and for the hit television show Peaky Blinders, which is famously set in the city in the 1920s.

Style Birmingham seems to go from strength to strength, this year it was expertly helmed by the partnership of ‘The Two Marks’ aka Mr Heyes and Mr Wright. Mark Wright showed why he is one of TVs hottest properties with his cheeky charm and personality, whilst television stylist Mark Heyes answered audience questions on fashion trends, and highlighted some of the key looks for A/W 2015. There was also hair advice from the Francesco Group

And then of course there was the fashion…

Birmingham independents like Liquor Store and Disorder, were joined by M&S, Episode, River Island and Lipsy to showcase a wide range of styles and trends, suitable for all tastes and age groups. The department stores were represented in ranges from House of Fraser, Debenhams and, of course, John Lewis, which had only opened in Birmingham 2 days before the first show.

A disco tinged finale featuring roller skating on the catwalk closed the show as the models showed off their best Saturday Night fever moves. There was just time for a few photographs before we moved onto the next event, the Harvey Nichols showcase. (Which you can read about here.)

My dress for Style Birmingham Live was from Studio 8, you can read the full review here.
