An evening talking hair with Nicky Clarke
A few weeks ago, before all the excitement and the frenetic madness that was Style Birmingham Live, I attended another event that could only be classed as amazing. Hair maestro and all-round legend Nicky Clarke hosted an evening to celebrate the opening of his new salon in Birmingham’s Mailbox, and I was very lucky to receive an invite to the event. The new salon is a classy, glamorous affair, with lots of space to ensure you avoid the sometimes cramped, claustrophobic confines that can be a problem in small, hot salons. I particularly loved the wall which is filled with glossy magazine covers that Nicky styled the hair for, a…

Get the best looks from the Q Awards with Boohoo
Last night saw the Q Awards, with some of the biggest names in music gathering to support the great and good as they collected hard earned awards. Robbie Williams, Jake Bugg and one of my 90s faves, Suede, were all at the event, but as with any awards ceremony, what I was really interested in was the fashion on show. Girl of the moment Ellie Goulding was on hand in a beautiful Temperley London dress. Although I profess boredom with the sheer skirts, I like this one, which is a litte like a cocktails style with an 80s style netting. Maybe it was the fact it had a little skirt…

X Factor Live Show – Week 2 Fashion
Week 2, and the X Factor is still seriously underwhelming us on the question of musical talent. With the exceptions of Hannah, Sam Bailey and the knockout and eventual winner that has to be Tamera, the show is woefully under-represented when it comes to real talent. Thank goodness then, for the fashion watch, which at least adds another element of interest to the story. And this week it was most definitely honours even, with Nicole being the undeniable winner of Saturday night, and Sharon taking the plaudits on Sunday’s results show. Saturday Night Nicole always looks amazing when she wears bright colours, and Saturday was no exception. Her halter styled…

Wallis show their take on the Little Black Dress
It is hard to believe there was ever a time that the ‘Little Black Dress’ wasn’t the chicest item in a lady’s wardrobe. But black dresses were once there solely required for mourning wear, not for every day use, and certainly not for evening wear. Thank goddess then, for Coco Chanel. The Little black dress became the modern icon of style, worn by Audrey when she took ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’, By Princess Diana as her revenge dress, by Kate Moss in a myriad of unforgettable looks, and by every young girl aiming at ‘Sophistication’. And whether you wear a simple black shift as a no-nonsense work look, or full on…

Kaliko coats – Bringing out the Hollywood Goddess in you
Winter coats can often be seen as just a practical requirement. It is cold, it is sometimes wet, therefore I need a coat that is comfortable and practical, something padded maybe, something waterproof. But sometimes, this very sensible attitude needs to be thrown out of the window, and you need to approach choosing a coat with a different attitude, asking yourself, ‘What would Marilyn chose?’ Because yes, we all need that practical, everyday coat in our wardrobe, but there is also room for something else. Something so glamorous it makes us feel like we have just stepped off a Hollywood movie set. Something that looks fabulous over dresses, and even…
