Andy Warhol Art Star At Wolverhampton Art Gallery
I spent a very special birthday in one of my favourite places, checking out a new exhibition from one of my favourite artists. The fabulous Wolverhampton Art Gallery is currently showing Andy Warhol: Art Star, an ARTIST ROOMS exhibition in partnership with Tate and National Galleries of Scotland. It is at the gallery until the 4th of October and is well worth a view if you’re a fan of Andy Warhol, or just a fan of pop art in general.
I adore Andy Warhol and his pop art, which comprises of some of the most iconic, and recognisable art of the 20th century. I love that he loved celebs, and that he created his own stars in ‘The Factory’ including Candy Darling, Ultra Violet, and the beautiful and doomed Edie Sedgwick. I love that he took the everyday and mundane, and made it a thing of high octane colour and beauty (think of those Campbell Soup tins).
Warhol’s fascination with fame, celebrity and commercial culture produced some of the most recognisable images in 20th century art.
The Exhibition
This major exhibition covers it all and includes both iconic and lesser-known drawings, screen prints, paintings and photographs from the 1950s-1980s, including images of Marilyn Monroe, The Beatles, Elizabeth Taylor and the famous ‘Campbell’s Soup’. There are images of Muhammad Ali, Mickey Mouse and Mick Jagger, as well as sketches of fellow artists like David Hockney, Robert Mapplethorpe and the fashion designer Halston.
This is not an exhibition that is related to celebrity alone though. There are larger canvases of more abstract art, and jarring images of a gun. There are lots of self portraits featuring Warhol in a range of guises and wigs – he was always a big star himself – and then collaborations and posters linked to the young guns of the early 1980s, Basquiat and Keith Haring, both of whom, like Warhol himself, did not outlast the decade.
Thoughts
This is an exhibition that fans of Warhol will absolutely adore, for its scope and choice of exhibits. But it is also brilliant for those who believe that Warhol is just cans of soup and Marilyn Monroe, this shows that his work is so so much more than that. Beautifully curated across three rooms, and with thought provoking, and stunning choices throughout, Andy Warhol – Art Star may just be the must see exhibition of Summer 2026.
