Kate. Marilyn And Elizabeth And The Allure Of Pearls.
10 years ago next month, Kate Winslet posed for a stunning photograph that appeared on the cover of V magazine. A shot of her beautiful face and a string of pearls was all that was needed to create the wonderful image. But the pictures also evoked the movie queens of days past, and speaks volumes about the eternal lure of pearls. I may be biased – pearls are my necklace of choice, my birthstone (for June), but whether it is an elegant gold and pearl necklace with a chain and a pendant, a simple string of pearls, or a vintage style choker, pearls evoke glamour, and elegance, and also a…

Zara Taylor Jewellery – unusual, quirky and wonderful!
At the recent CICI press day I was thrilled to meet the supremely talented Zara Taylor, the founder and creator of Zara Taylor London, a vintage inspired jewellery line that is attracting huge attention and a celebrity following. I was really impressed with Zara’s creations, which look and feel like beautiful lost treasures that you have uncovered in a long forgotten jewel box. Zara’s pieces include cameos, timepieces and long pendants that are created from both vintage and vintage-inspired materials. I love the telescope that actually works, and the adorable ‘a nice cuppa rosy lea’ pendant with its delicate china cup and pink rose. The vintage timepieces, wore on a…

The power of a slogan t-shirt!
This weekend I have experienced the full power of the slogan t-shirt. An item of clothing that Iwould never wear under normal circumstances, the slogan t-shirt is a modern classic, immortalised by Katherine Hamnett designs in the 1980’s. Who could forget Wham wearing ‘Choose Life’ tees whilst singing ‘Wake me up before you go go‘, or ‘Frankie says relax’ tees that were worn by everyone, including my 6 year old sister, totally in ignorance of the controversy behind Frankie goes to Hollywood, and that song. Katherine Hamnett famously meet Margaret Thatcher whilst wearing her slogan tee – shirt, keeping her politics close to her chest. Slogan tees saw a revival…

Why age no longer defines fashion.
I have the same New Look dress as Rochelle from The Saturdays. Rochelle is in her early twenties, I am in my mid 30’s. Which begs the question – am I too old for this dress, or is the dress too old for Rochelle? The answer, happily, is no on both counts. The days when shops had a clearly age defined audience have long gone, with mothers and daughters happily shopping in the same places, and sometimes buying the same things. Why is this now the case? Part of the answer to this is that women, in many cases, look younger than we did 30 years old. Thirtysomethings can often…

Five Minutes with Helen Boyle – a quick chat with a Fashionista.
Fashion-Mommy was lucky enough to meet Fashion stylist and TV presenter Helen Boyle at the ‘Newlife at Home’ launch. Helen is a true fashionista, with more than ten years experience in the fashion industry. Sha has worked as the resident fashion stylist on ITV’s ‘This Morning’ and was more recently the fashion producer and co-presenter on Sky 1’s ‘Angela and friends’. In addition to this, Helen was the fashion producer on one of my favourite programmes, Channel 4’s ‘Gok’s Fashion Fix‘. Fashion-Mommy was able to put a few questions to a true style heroine. Fashion-Mommy: How did you get into fashion? Helen Boyle: Through sheer hard work. I started of…
