Little Voice brings Judy and Marilyn to life at the Birmingham Rep
One of the most memorable scenes in modern film is the one where a drunken, shambolic Ray Say, played by the magnificent Michael Caine, sings an expletive laden version of ‘It’s Over’ by Roy Orbison. This is, of course, a scene from Little Voice, the film version of the National theatre smash hit ‘The Rise and Fall of the Little Voice’, and it is one of my favourite films. So I had very high expectations of the new touring production starring ex Coronation Street stalwarts Vicky Entwhistle and Chris Gascoyne that opened at the Birmingham Rep last night. I’m pleased to say that the play and performances exceeded every single…

12 Angry Men – Tense, Taut and Utterly Brilliant
It seems an open and shut case. A young black boy, just 16, kills his abusive father after one too many beatings. A strong witness is positive he heard the boy say he was going to kill just before the father was fatally stabbed. Another witness saw the stabbing and then saw the boy flee. An open and shut case. This is the premise of 12 Angry Men, a classic Henry Fonda film turned into a magnificent piece of claustrophobic, thought provoking…

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels charm at The New Alex
Two very different conmen, a suave man of the world who may also be a Prince, or a pychiatrist, on any given day, and a young and vulgar upstart who spins an unlikely yarn in a way that could bring tears to the eyes. These were the Scoundrels who charmed and delighted the New Alex Theatre last night. It was the press launch for ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’, which showed, in all it’s glory, why it was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including best new musical. It is simply one of the best nights in theatre. Lawrence (the suave and devilish Michael Praed) is the king of the Riviera Conmen, able…

Basil Brush is back – Check out the Full on Fox Tour
If you are looking for some fun, family entertainment then I would highly recommend you check out The Basil Brush show that is currently in the middle of a UK tour. We saw the show today at the Lichfield Garrick (which is definitely one of the friendliest theatre’s in the UK), and we all truly enjoyed it, with belly laughs a-plenty and Basil proving he has lost non of his wit and charm after 50 years in show business. Basil Brush has recently had a relaunch that has seen a whole You Tube channel dedicated to the pesky blighter. As a fan of the programme from way back when I…
