The Buddy Holly Story at the Wolverhampton Grand
As a teen I loved The Wonderstuff and their album ‘Never Loved Elvis’. This was partly because the title was true. I’d never loved Elvis, it had always been about Buddy Holly in our house. From an early age I can remember ‘That’ll be the Day’ ringing out from my little record player, the graffiti emblazoned cover of ‘Buddy Holly Lives’ on my bedroom floor. It’s a memory and love that has remained with me, and was resurrected in supreme style last night, as the brilliant ‘The Buddy Holly Story’ electrified the Wolverhampton Grand. ‘The Buddy Holly Story’ is the story of Buddy’s meteoric rise to fame. If your image…

Christmas Belle – Kim Wilde
This year’s entry in my annual Christmas Belle’s series is Kim Wilde. It seems this series, which looks at a female singer of a fab Christmas hit who also happens to be a bit of a style icon, is firmly entrenched in the 1980s, with previous entries including Kate Bush and Chrissie Hynde. Kim Wilde was one of the biggest, British female stars of the 1980s, with a career that stretched the whole decade. Dolly Parton made a surprise appearance at the Wolverhampton Grand last night, as a hologram introducing the musical theatre version of one of her most famous movies. The South Staffs Musical Theatre Company were in town, with the opening night of their fun filled version of ‘9 to 5’. And, despite the fact that one of the leading ladies was ill and had to be replaced at the very last minute, the company put on a fine show filled with songs, laughter and sisters doing it for themselves. ‘9 TO 5’ is set in 1979 and tells the tale of three suburban ladies, a clever and ambitious widow Violet (played…

Sunny Afternoon – The Kinks Musical at the New Alex Theatre
The Summer of 1966 must have been the best time to be alive. London was swinging (apparently), England won the World Cup and it was all soundtracked by the stunning, iconic sounds of The Kinks, with Sunny Afternoon pouring out of radio’s everywhere. But, ‘Sunny Afternoon;, The Kinks musical written by frontman Ray Davies, shows that behind the brilliance of the songs, there was a band tortured by fame, mental illness and internal strife. This was all brought vividly to life in Birmingham, at the New Alex Theatre last night. Sunny Afternoon is the story of the early Kinks from Ray Davies side of the story. It shows the start…
