Golden Globes 2013 – Best and Worst dressed

The 2013 Golden Globe awards were a pretty glamorous affair. It was a night when it seemed everything and anything went stylewise, from colour to monochrome, lace to satin, full-skirted to streamlined. It was also a night when most stars seemed to get it right, although there were (as ever) a few notable exceptions to the rule. A great night for Adele, who went for a ‘girls night out’ and then bagged an award, and another great night for Anne Hathaway and Claire Danes, who won both the acting awards and the style plaudits.  Let’s see what everyone was wearing for the glitziest night of 2013 so far.

Black is back

Black is often considered a safe choice on the red carpet, and there were black dressed in abundance at the Golden Globes. Some were amazing. I loved Selma Hayek showing off her sex bomb curves in Gucci, and Sofia Vergara stepping away from her usual bright colours was also a welcome departure. Nicole Kidman continued her good run in an elegant Alexander McQueen column dress with little bees on the neckline, whilst Julianne Moore was one of the best dressed on the night in a beautiful monochrome number that was the result of an email to her close friend Tom Ford. (Lucky lady!). Another best dressed contender was ‘Smash’ star Katherine McPhee, who looked incredible in a revealing black dress from Theyskens Theory. This reminded me of the dress Rooney Mara wore to last years Golden Globes, except Katherine more than filled this design out in a way the waifish Rooney never did.

Not all black dresses were as successful though. Adele looked beautiful with her 1960s style beehive and pleated Christopher Bailey dress, but it was more of the same. It would be so nice to see her in a different colour, or to attempt a different shape, just for a change. Rachel Weisz had the best accessory of the night on her arm (James Bond of course!), but her Louis Vuitton dress just looked like two dresses stuck together, this would’ve been so much chicer as a cocktail dress, without the sheer panel.

Red Alert

Red was another hot choice on the evening, with the Red Queen undoubtedly Claire Danes. She looked unbelievable in a Halston styled dress from Atelier Versace. Can you believe she had a baby just a month ago?  I also loved the Farah Fawcett 70s waves she had in her hair, and the sexy smoky eyed look. Another best dressed contender for me.

Naomi Watts went for an ox blood shade of red for her backless, long-sleeved gown from Zac Posen. This actually reminded me of a gown the late Princess of Wales wore in the late 1990s, and I thought it was an elegant choice for Naomi. Jennifer Garner also wore red, a lovely strapless gown from Vivienne Westwood that had a really flattering bustline detail. Jennifer Lawrence and Zooey Deschanel opted for very similar red strapless gowns that were less successful. If I had to opt for one I would go for Jennifer’s, which seemed to fit better, but both were a bit uninspired in my eyes. Marion Cotillard also went for Dior red, in a gown of two halves. The bodice looked amazing, but the uneven skirt length just looked messy. Marion was also in some serious need of adornment – this was a very plain look.

Nude…and the palest of pinks

I must admit I’m getting really bored of all the nude dresses that seem to be on display every awards ceremony. Admittedly, some are beautiful, like the Megan Fox Dolce and Gabbana number, and Amy Adams, who was old school glamour personified in Marchesa. But too many are like the Givenchy horror sported by Amanda Seyfried. This was like an old lace curtain, and the scruffy hair didn’t help matters either. Sienna Miller, was, ahem, flying the flag for British design in an Erdem skirt and top that looked like it was a hobbycraft project gone seriously wrong. Thank goodness then, for Kerry Washington, who chose a vintage inspired Miu Miu dress that was exquisite. Kudos for her glorious hair too.

Other looks.

These were the dresses that can’t be defined. They used different colours than the main red carpet trends, had a different silhouette,  or were a departure for the star wearing them. In short, these have a category of their own for not fitting my other categories.

Jodie Foster was the recipient of a special award and looked dazzling in navy blue Armani. The chain mail detail looked just exquisite under the lights and I liked Jodie’s chic bobbed hair too. Julianna Margulies also looked impeccable. Her dress was from Pucci and was again backless ( a bit of a mini trend on the night.). I thought the net, beading and lace was a very interesting and beautiful choice.

Nicole Richie wore one of the prettiest dresses on the night, a periwinkle blue beaded gown from Naeem Khan. This dress was similar to those vintage column dresses that wear popular in the early 1960s.something that Jackie Kennedy would’ve worn. Very flattering, and one of Nicole’s best ever looks.

Lucy Lui made my night by opting for something totally different from the rest. In a gorgeous floral gown from Carolina Herrera, Lucy just stood out. It was also such a departure from the form-fitting sequins Lucy often opts for, and when I realised this dress had pockets, I was truly smitten.

Taylor Swift continues her run of can do absolutely no wrong on the red carpet in DKNY dress. This showed all the detail from the back and side, with netting on the side and another perfect back on show. This dress was deceptively plain, and was such a sophisticated choice for the young singer. Harry who?

Jessica Alba is another star who always seems to get it spot on for red carpet events. The beautiful star chose to wear a Hollywood classic from Oscar De La Renta in a lovely coral shade. This was a typical Jessica dress, but she wore it well and it was perfectly accessorised with the pretty feathered clutch bag.

The woman of the night was the radiant Anne Hathaway. She scooped best actress award for her role as Fantine in Les Miserables, and showed that she is fast becoming the successor to the Audrey Hepburn understated and beautiful award for red carpet dressing. This simple, and yet exquisite gown was from Chanel, and paired with that oh-so-chic pixie haircut and mega wattage smile, she showed exactly how to work a carpet.

And then there is the total red carpet shocker. I saw Jessica Chastain from the back and went WOW! The seafoam colour of the dress reminded me of something Grace Kelly wore in the 1950s, and was the perfect colour against Jessica’s red hair…and then she turned around. And this Calvin Klein gown turned out to be a complete frocky horror. The strange bustline made the pert star seem saggy, whilst the waistband did nothing to streamline the look. Unfortunately, worst dressed of the night from a star I had very high hopes for.
