SAG Awards – All the trends

Last night saw the next event on the glittery awards cavalcade. The Screen Actors Guild awards are less formal than the Globes or the Oscars so many stars opt for a slightly less showy look. This year there were some truly stunning looks on show, and some key trends, including 70s glamour, black is back and ponytails. There were also splashes of block colour, with red, blue and green all looking great on the Red Carpet.

Trends 70s chic

Angela Jolie wore one of the key trends on the night – 70s disco. She wore a stunning fluid black gown from Jenny Packham. The dress, with low back and draped front, was super sexy,and Angelina kept the 70s theme going in hooped vintage earrings. I was super excited by this choice as I had earlier tweeted Cosmopolitan that Angelina would wear Jenny Packham – and was proved to be correct!

Tilda Swinton also keyed into the 1970s trend, wearing a pleated white dress that looked like it could’ve come from Halston circa 1977. This was custom-made Lanvin and I think it was a spectacular choice for Tilda. I also loved her hairstyle, so much chicer than the Jedward she sported at the Golden Globes.

Probably the look that I loved most was this Elie Saab jumpsuit, as worn by Rose Byrne. This was an exciting choice, the beautifully beaded suit had a ‘Carlito’s Way’ feel to it, whilst her neat bobbed hairstyle reminded me of 20s icon Louise Brooks. I couldn’t fault any of it, and  loved the fact that this outfit had sat in the wardrobe for a few years, just waiting to wow us!

Another lady opting for that draped seventies look was Melissa McCarthy. I think she looked beautiful in this midnight blue dress, this was such an improvement on her Golden Globes Dress and the ruching was ultra flattering. The designer was Badgley Mischka.

Trends – Back to Black

If The Golden Globes was all about nudes, then the SAG awards saw stars  and starlets going back to black. As well as the aforementioned Angelina, many other ladies chose the dark shade. Stacey Keibler looked just exquisite in a gorgeous lace column dress by Marchesa, one of the hottest design teams on the night. The dress has a spanish feel to it, and she accessorised perfectly with George Clooney.

Glee girl Jayma Mays chose a gorgeous black sequined gown my Reem Acra. I love this dress, a simple shape that allows all the blingy sequins to do the talking.

Emma Stone was, as ever, perfect. Her sense of style never fails to impress, and in custom-made Alexander McQueen, this was true yet again. I  loved the length of this gown, not  floor sweeping so it  had a youthful feel. The embellished bodice was beautiful, and as for the shoes…

Ashlee Simpson was another star who chose Jenny Packham. This is the best  I have ever seen here look – she looks divine! I love the fact that this dress has a gothic glam look to it, a little bit spiders web. Her hair also looked super stylish in a shorter style.

Trend – brights

Emily Blunt chose an emerald-green gown from Oscar De La Renta that just screamed ‘movie star’. With her  raven locks, this was the perfect colour for the Young Victoria star.

Michelle Williams went for classic red Valentino, a dress right on the lace trend. It was an elegant look for the gamine star, and her make-up was just flawless.

I hated Jessica Chastain’s look at The Golden Globes, it was ageing and made her looked washed out. But I think she got it spot-on at the Sag’s in figure hugging Calvin Klein in a stunning, vibrant blue. This was minimalist style at its best, and the blue was the perfect contrast for her porcelain skin and red hair.

Sofia Vergera came over all Marilyn Monroe/Material girl Madonna in another perfect fashion moment. The pink was of the hot variety, and I loved that she wore with  purple jewels for a touch of the colour clash.

Viola Davis wore an ethereal strapless gown from Marchesa that just floated onto the red carpet, it was so beautiful. Viola later showed that dress off perfectly as she collected the award for best actress for ‘The Help’.

When bad looks happen to good people

Amber Heard is beautiful, but in this bandage style dress by Zac Posen, with that severe hair, she looks like the Bride of Frankenstein.

Kristen Wiig was another who had an off night. Without the choker, this Balenciaga dress would’ve been an elegant choice. So why did Kristen decide to add the ‘Sid Snot’ punk neckwear? High Neck dresses always clash with chokers – hasn’t she learnt nothing from Nicole Kidman?

The Antonio Berardi dress, as worn by Jame Krakowski, just needed that bustier detail to be a little bit higher to avoid giving Jane’s breasts that ‘boob job’ look, which takes the dress from classy to tacky in an instant.

Really wish Lea Michele would stop wearing Elizabeth Hurley’s frocks…

Adore Amber Riley usually, but this looks like an extra from the handjive scene in Grease. So fussy, that bow is just too much.
