Style focus – spots before the eyes.

If there is one print I am more than a little partial to, it is spots and dots. It is a print that has long been a favourite of fashionista’s, from Marilyn Monroe in the 1950s, Princess Diana in the 1980s right up to the present with the Duchess of Cambridge, Taylor Swift, and birthday girl Kate Moss, who wears it with her usual finesse and style.

Why do I like dots and spots? I think it is because as a print it ticks so many boxes. You can wear giant polka dots for a fun, retro look. Tiny, spotted styles can be more sophisticated, especially on a pencil skirt or fitted dress. Colour makes a difference too. White with black spots looks fresh and cute in summer, but black with white spots is perfectly acceptable for Winter wear. Orange and brown spots just scream 70s retro wallpaper. (Actually, best avoid that one…).

And Spots can also indicate your favourite decade. Polka dots on a full skirt and you’re in  1950s Grease territory. Add those same polka dots to a shift dress and the swinging sixties are back with a bang. Spots have been a trend at some point during every one of the last six decades, and they are back once again this Winter.

Dots are also great on accessories if you don’t fancy the full look.
