Children’s Fashion Focus – River Island

There comes a time in every parent’s life when you realise that your child is growing up, like truly growing up. This is happening to me at the moment with my (not so little) boy. Joe will be nine Christmas, and has suddenly discovered fashion and aftershave. It’s scary for me as his mom, but very exciting in that Joe is suddenly more interested in shopping, and in places other than the sports shop.

His latest discovery is River Island, which, has well as having a pretty amazing ladies collection this Autumn (I’m wearing River Island as I type this) now has a great children’s collection that goes from birth to 12 years old. The collection, for both boys and girls, is gorgeous and very wearable. It has a cool edge that trendy kids will love, but it also practical and remembers that kids are kids. So you have great looking skinny jeans that come with a skull keyring attached, something that is sure to delight even the fussiest dresser.

The collection is all encompassing, so there are pieces that are perfect for every day and the weekend wear, as well as smarter shirts and formal gear for when your mini fashionista wants to get a little more dressed up.I love the long sleeved polo tops for boys that are an echo of the current men’s collection, just great for those boys who want to dress like daddy. There are also all the things that boys seem to gravitate too, I’m talking hoodies, parkas and a t-shirts with a range of slogans, logos and prints.

Joe recently chose the blue shirt featured below and really loves it, and this week I was actually able to persuade him that there were other types of footwear out there, not just trainers, when he picked a pair of RI boots to wear for a trip to the theatre this week.

Has your child discovered fashion yet?

A holiday wardrobe for Joe

In just three weeks time I will be getting really excited, and probably very flustered and panicked, as we make the final touches to our holiday packing. There is always that last minute fluster, have we got everything? Are we taking too many, or not enough clothes for two weeks? Will Joe, once again, wear every single thing in his case thanks to the devil that is melting ice cream? The answer is more than likely yes to all questions, but at least with Joe’s stuff the packing is easier to begin with as he will literally live in shorts and t-shirts for the whole of the two weeks.

I love good quality children’s clothing, it washes better and lasts longer, and for holidays, when there is excessive amounts of suncream, ice cream, sea and sand and countless other things that can literally wreck kids clothing, I think it is even more important that the stuff you choose will last longer than the two weeks you spend on your jollies. That is why this year I have chosen pieces from the House of Fraser kids department – shorts and t-shirts, a few short sleeved shirts for special nights, and, of course, swimwear.

House of Fraser has a really great kids offering that has increased in recent times, and I was well impressed with the pieces I reviewed earlier in the year (you can check out that review here), so it made sense to go back and choose some more stylish togs for my boy.

Here are a few of the bits that caught my eye.

The Top Baby Clothing Designers

Most parents would do anything for their babies. That often includes dressing them in the nicest, fanciest clothes they can afford. However, there’s not that many good lists dedicated to these things, so we’ve sought out the top designers of baby clothing from around the world, including budget-friendly options and extravagant picks for the big spenders. Be warned, lots of small clothing coming up…

Bam Bam

Dutch brand Bam Bam aren’t easy to find in the UK (you can find them in the House of Rokoko baby gifts range or at Alexa & Alexa) but theirs is one of the cutest collections around, thanks to their obsession with ducks and crowns. The rubber duck bath toy in pink for girls is a great keepsake. But, where were we, this about the clothes. Most of them are simply and classically designed, with the supersoft cotton hooded bathrobes, tiny bonnets, and comfy slippers being something of their signature items.

Bluebird Creations

Based in Tring, Hertfordshire, Bluebird Creations have carved themselves a bit of a niche in the baby clothes market by styling their items to look like cupcakes, celebration cakes, and even bon bons. Since 2009 they’ve been injected a bit of fun into things with cheekily named products like “Ready to Pop”, a set of starred pyjamas in a replica popcorn box, and the sock lollipops, 100% organic cotton socks rolled into balls and placed on sticks.

Kissy Kissy

Founded by Tatiana & Company, the American brand Kissy Kissy is all about showcasing baby sets made from the finest Peruvian Pima cotton. Luxuriously soft and one of the softest fabrics for babies’ skin, this cotton is the bedrock of their offerings along with fabulous attention to detail, from the adorable sailor collar dress to the polka dot sun hats. They’re so good they’ve been sporting by the kids of Angelina Jolie, Drew Barrymore, and Salma Hayek.

Burberry

Last but definitely not least, is Burberry’s baby range. The British brand has an enviable history: founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856, it has been favoured by explorers and aviators over the years as well as the upper classes and fashionistas. Their dresses, tops and down-filled snowsuits all feature the iconic pattern and are made from the finest materials. The bodysuits with check collar and the beautifully-crafted cardigans are some of the best looking products; the double-knit cashmere/silk blend jacket is a truly extravagant purchase.
