Long sleeved shift dresses at Wallis

Long sleeved shift dress styles are a great addition to your Winter Wardrobe. The long sleeved style makes them much warmer than a traditional shift, and they look great with opaque tights and chunky ankle boots or Mary Janes. The shift dress has a 1960s feel, but is also very versatile. Worn with a strappy metallic sandal and a clutch bag, and you have a chic evening look. Add tights, boots and a blazer, and this will work well as workwear. With a chunky knit cardigan and a woolly scarf, this can make a cool winter option. A long sleeved shift dress certainly earns its keep in your wardrobe, and if you can pick one up in the Janaury sales, so much the better.

Wallis has always been a great port of call to find this type of dress, it is one of their style staples and is a design I chose when I did my style challenge with the Fort Shopping Centre (you can find that post here.) This year Wallis has a great range of Long and three quarter sleeved shift styles which come in a range of colours and also in printed varieties. The styles are versatile and also ageless – you only have to look at the pictures above to see that shift dresses can suit everyone, from a 40-something Victoria Beckham, to a 30-something like Michelle Dockery, right through to the barely out of teens Kendall Jenner.

I’ve picked my favourite shifts from the current Wallis collection, I would love to know if you have a fave from my choices, or if this is a look that you ever wear. Some of the designs are now £30 and under, so now is a good time to add a shift to your wardrobe.

High Street Outlet Joanna Occasion Party Dress

High Street Outlet is one of my most visited websites. I love great quality High Street pieces, and totally love a bargain, so it stands to reason that I would love a site that offers up to 70% off the recommended retail price. The website has new lines added every week, with warm winter coats being added at the moment, so this is not just a site where you can pick up a bargain to put away until next summer, you can buy things that you can actually wear now.

I am lucky enough to have a lovely relationship with High Street Outlet where they often send me clothes to test drive and review. Most recently I was sent a truly stunning, versatile dress, the EX Kaliko Ladies Womens Mauve Purple Black Joanna Occasion Party Dress. This is a perfect Autumn dress, the fabric is double layer, with a stretchy underlayer in black, and then a purple printed floral layer that is almost like chiffon. The dress is semi fitted, and has a ruched panel at the side with a kind of draped detail. This is great if you have a larger tummy area, as the ruching draws the eyes away from the stomach.

This dress is very elegant, and can easily switch between being a day dress to a dress suitable for evening occasions. The chiffon style fabric gives it a dressed up edge, but add a smart black blazer and this will take you easily into a work meeting. The fact it has sleeves also ticks a lot of boxes – making it a warmer option for Autumn, great for those who want to cover their upper arms, and also more demure for those occasions when flashing the flesh just isn’t an option.

I have worn this dress for Sunday Lunch, and also for a night at the Theatre. It is a dress that can easily take you from day to night, and one which also looks great with tights – a great point with winter on it’s way. And, if you still need persuading that this is a dress that your wardrobe needs, did I mention it now costs just £9.99. Yes, you heard right, this stunning dress is less than £10 and is available in sizes 8-18.

Introducing Patricia O’ Toole – feel good fashion

The blogging community is very supportive, with many warm and wonderful ladies and gents who offer advice, support and opportunities to others whenever they can. One such lovely blogger is Avril Keys who writes the fabulous School Gate Style. Avril is based in Northern Ireland, and recommended my blog and work to a new designer who truly understands how to dress womanly curves. Her name is Patricia O’ Toole, and I will be eternally grateful to Avril for introducing me to this great new brand, ‘Beautiful You’.

Since having Joe my tummy has most definitely been my problem area, and though in recent years I have lost weight and have gone down two dress sizes, the extra weight I carry on my tummy just refuses to budge. So when I wear fitted clothes, particularly the smart dresses that are my clothing of choice, I often add shapewear to lift, hold and keep everything in place, particularly my ‘jelly-belly’.

Patricia O’Toole recognised a similar problem, she says:-
“…Several years ago I was searching for clothes to hide my tummy when I realized that my body had changed and no amount of dieting or exercise was going to restore it to my younger shape! I wanted elegant clothing that worked with me and my busy life. After much searching on the internet I became frustrated with the lack of choice available. So I decided to do something about it and created a collection of classic outfits that have built-in shapewear so you don’t have to worry about underwear lines…”

I have fallen in love with the range, with dresses that literally skim the figure and feel so comfortable to wear. The shapewear is built in, but is not restrictive or tight, and helps remove the unsightly lines you can get from underwear showing through tighter-fitting dresses. Below I am wearing the Patricia dress in teal, which is a lovely warm dress that is perfect for the current transitional weather, and can easily take you from day to night wear.

The fabric is lovely, a puckered stretch design that makes the dress more interesting than a simple wrap style. The side ruching is another detail I love, pulling the eyes to the side of the dress rather than to the tummy area. 3/4 sleeves are also fabulous, both for those who dislike their upper arms, and for when the days are chilly.

I added simple silver jewellery and black Mary Janes to my outfit, and wore this for my hubby’s night out this week. It was perfect for the Chinese restaurant we went to, dressy, but not overly so – you could change this by adding a clutch bag and metallic shoes, or a vintage brooch.

I think Patricia O’ Toole dresses are on the way to becoming an absolute wardrobe staple – something that can be grabbed from the wardrobe and thrown on – no ironing required. The Patricia dress also comes in classic black, cream, navy and red – I would frankly love one in every colour.

There will be a second Patricia O’ Toole review coming up in the next couple of weeks, so look out for it!

*With thanks to Patricia O’Toole for sending me the dress for review purposes.
