Friday Fashion Focus – Birkenstocks

Iconic brands of footwear? Well, there’s Jimmy Choo’s, Manolo’s, Hunter Wellies, Havainas, Stan Smith’s and Louboutin’s for starters. And, of course, when we are talking about icons of Summer footwear, we really shouldn’t miss out the original sandal that made comfort the number one concern, and won a celebrity following in the process. Of course, I am talking about Birkenstocks.

The company is a German legend. With the original flexible footbed insoles in production since 1896, Birkenstocks are now the sandals to turn to when you need your feet to be comfortable in the Summer months. With their unisex designs and their soft footbeds, Birkies are the sandals that mold themselves to your feet, ensuring that, once you have worn them in, they will be like wearing a pair of slippers. And frankly, who wouldn’t want to be in their slippers all day?

The role call of stylish celebrities who insist on Birkenstocks is like a who’s who from Vogue. Ashley Olsen, Miranda Kerr, Heidi Klum, Drew Barrymore and Alexa Chung are just a few of the ladies who pull out the trusted sandals each Summer, wearing them with everything from jeans and denim shorts, to maxi skirts and dresses. They are totally versatile and there are plenty of styles to choose from, with Jones Bootmaker having a great selection to choose from, including my personal favourite style, the Madrid, along with the Arizona and Gizah varieties.

Birkenstocks are certainly not the prettiest sandal out there, but for the beach, the school run, running daily errands, even traveling to and from work, there are certainly no sandals more practical, more comfortable or more iconic. If Alexa and Miranda think they are perfect, then who are we to argue the point?

The Wonderful World of Shoes

I have a slight obsession with shoes! Ok, scratch that, I have an enormous obsession with shoes. I just love beautiful footwear, and it is the one thing that I find really hard to resist, even when I’m on a spending ban. Trying to pass a shoe shop, particularly when there is a sale on, is the equivalent of King Midas bypassing the Jewellery Quarter – it’s just not going to happen.

I must have two hundred pairs by now, from vintage pieces from Bally and Salvatore Ferragamo (charity shop finds), to designer pairs from Westwood and Marc Jacobs. I love high street brands too, and find all my summer flip flops in Primark for a couple of pounds. My shoes do actually range from the sublime to the ridiculous, via everything else in between, and I even sustained a shoe related injury when I caught a heel in a car seatbelt and broke 3 bones in my foot!

Jones Bootmaker have recently put together a really fun and informative history of shoes which they have traced back to Ancient Egypt and then tracked all the way to the present. It is full of fun facts about your favourite styles of footwear, and if you ever needed another reason to be glad you didn’t live in 18th Century France at the time of the revolution, (other than the fact that there was an awful lot of heading loping off going on), the fact that high heels were banned may be the absolute tipping point.

Enjoy!
