Style in the City – what to wear in New York

Of all the wonderful cities in the world, it is New York that I truly wish to visit. Times Square, the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, a Sex in the City Tour, Broadway, there are just so many things I want to do and places I want to visit, the Big Apple is absolutely top of my bucket list when it comes to travel and city breaks.

Travel giant Thomson recently asked me to create a fashion mood board for the city I would most love to visit, and obviously New York was my number one choice. I thought carefully about the theme of ‘party’ and decided that, in this most sophisticated of cities, party would mean cocktails and a night taking in a show on Broadway. I did think about using Carrie Bradshaw as my starting point, but, again keeping the sophistication of the city in mind, I decided to focus on Audrey Hepburn style in that most New York of movies. ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’.

My key choice was a Max Mara wool, silk blend dress that has both simplicity and elegance.  I love the fact that the dress is classic navy rather than black (Navy is a better choice for blondes). I would add a Jimmy Choo Agnes 100 glitter court in anthracite for a touch of glamour, with a Skinny Dip glitter clutch.  With all the glittery glamour of the bag and shoes, I would avoid Audrey’s necklace, but would give a nod to the pearls with some Tory Burch crystal pearl drop earrings.

The colour palette is stark, with the navy dress contrasted against the metallic glitter of both the shoes and bag, I think this works well as understated yet glamorous look that would work for cocktails, the ballet or Opera, or food in a top floor restaurant.

Have you ever visited New York?

A treat for your mobile phone

If you asked 100 women what the most important item they carried around in their handbag every single day was, I’m guessing  (at least) 99 would say their mobile phone. Smart phones are such an important part of our lives, we use them to shop, to book tickets, to take photographs, to text, Snapchat, Whatsapp and play games. Sometimes, we even use them to call people on. Our phones contain ticket information, our banking, our photographs and videos, they do the job that used to be done by cameras, diaries, trips to the bank and a whole lot more. Sites like the Mobile Network Guide have become invaluable for news and reviews, as well as contact numbers for our networks. Frankly, losing a phone these days is like losing an arm or a leg.

Which is why we need to treat our phones with a little bit of love and respect. I was always happy to just throw my phone into my bag, and ended up cracking a few screens just doing this. Our new phones can do so much, but this makes them fragile and so much easier to break than the ‘brick’ style machines we used to use.  That is why cases and holders have become so important, and as much a fashion accessory as your handbag.

Just a quick glance at the Selfridges website shows you that you can buy a case from most of your favourite designers, from Michael Kors and Kate Spade, to cool high street and cult designer efforts from Ted Baker and Skinny Dip London. There are a great mixture of hard cases that fit onto the back of your phone, or leather and plastic cases to actually hold the phone.

If your phone is an integral part of your life, and one you couldn’t do without, then treating it to a special case is definitely money well spent.

Launer Bags and Champagne – Selfridges celebrates The Queen at 90

This weekend sees Queen Elizabeth II celebrate her official 90th birthday. Although her actual birthday was in April, June is the official birthday month, with Trooping the Colour the celebration of this ‘birthday’. That means the lady is an honourary Gemini, which can only be a good thing. (Can you guess what my birth sign is…)

Ahead of a weekend of celebrations, beacons, parties and all round jolly happenings, Selfridges has shone a spotlight on one of The Queen’s favourite brands. When she see Her Majesty carrying those very neat and highly chic handbags, there is a 99% chance that it will be from Launer London. These leather totes are beautiful leather creations that are often perfectly matched to her outfits, and have a timeless appeal a little bit like the lady herself. Launer London bags are not cheap, they are most definitely a luxury item that may require you to remortgage your house in order to afford them. But they are classically elegant, a bag you might be using forever (or at least until you’re 90 if Elizabeth ll is anything to go by.

Celebrate in Style

If you are planning your own celebration this weekend, Selfridges have put together a selection of hampers, gift boxes and afternoon tea selections that could help your party go with a bang (or maybe a hic! – there’s a lot of wine included.) My favourite has to be the Prosecco Celebration trio, because frankly one bottle is never enough, and, as I already mentioned sharing a (honourary) star sign with her Madge, I think this weekend is close enough to my birthday to start my own personal celebrations.
