There’s a circus in the town – Billy Smart’s Circus is on tour

The Circus is in town! Yes, the world famous Billy Smart’s Circus is touring and will be hitting my neck of the woods, Wolverhampton West Park, next week (Tuesday April 1st to be exact), for a 6 day stay. Now in its 68th year, Billy Smart’s Circus is a name that is synonymous with the circus tradition and offers an exciting, family friendly experience for all to enjoy. This is a circus that celebrates the talents of the human performers – there are no animals on display here.

What you can look forward to is described as a ‘dazzling combination of theatre, music and dance’. An array of internationally renowned artistes deliver exciting performances of traditional circus fare, including acrobatics, comedy, juggling, illusion and aerial feats. big-top

This year’s artistes include:

THE FLYING ACES from Australia – five exciting youngsters on the flying trapeze

The ASADULLIN TROUPE from Russia bring their spectacular Springboard and Russian Bar acts to the UK for the first time

The X-TREME BROTHERS, a trio of handsome and talented acrobats from Romania are sure to be a talking point of the show

Italian clown JONNY BOGINO brings his whimsical comedy style to the UK audiences for the first time

Argentinian bolas drumming from GABRIEL CARMONA and partner liven up the proceedings together with the foot juggling skills of GERMAINE DELBOSQ from France

And if all this wasn’t enough, the bar is raised even higher with the addition of a LIVE BAND, the only one in a British touring Circus, to complement the energy and action.

Harvey Nichols hosts a secret fashion show

A secret destination for a very special show

Last Wednesday saw a very special, clandestine fashion show held in Birmingham. Harvey Nichols, based in Birmingham’s Mailbox, is known for bringing style and panache to their shows. The A/W 2013/4 show was a large and lavish affair, with more than 600 attendees. But current renovation work at the Mailbox necessitated a rethink, and the Harvey Nicks team did not disappoint. Moving on from the grand spectacle of last year, we were treated to an intimate affair that was quite literally the hottest ticket in town. Top secret, there were no tweets or posts until the very day, and 600 guests were replaced by a guest list of just 120 – consisting of celebrities, valued customers, and a few invited bloggers. The venue was also a secret, with guests literally being escorted to the surprise venue, a disused building on John Bright Street that had a cool industrial New York air, especially with the soft lighting and neon signs.

And, of course, there was the clothes…

Birmingham Harvey Nichols is one of the smaller boutique stores in the HN family at present, but is able to offer the full Harvey Nichols collection. This full collection was what the audience lapped up, with the cream of the fashion world on display.  Peter Pilotto, Dries Van Noten, Mary Katrantzou, Victoria Beckham, Markus Lupfer, Thakoon, Roksanda Ilincic, Proenza Schouler and JW Anderson – it was like a roll call of all that is fresh and vibrant in fashion in the 21st Century. Add in classic pieces from Givenchy, Diane Von Furstenberg and Roland Mouret, and you have one seriously hot show.

Here are just a few of the key looks.

Of course, following on from the fashion, there was an after show party, this started with more Champagne and goody bags back at the Mailbox store, and then an after- after show party at Malmaison. Unfortunately, being a school night, I didn’t do the second party, but did enjoy a little tipple and chat with my fave bloggers back at the store.

Spring at Dorothy Perkins

Spring has sprung at Dorothy Perkins, and it is looking very, very pretty. The High Street store is always one of my fave places to visit when I’m updating my wardrobe for the new season for many reasons. It covers the trends, but not in a fashion victim way. It offers lots of variety, with the additional ranges like Billie & Blossom and Little Mistress. And, most importantly for thrifty fashionista’s, it offers great quality at reasonable prices.

The season, Dorothy Perkins is showcasing gorgeous Spring florals, both in strong prints and applique detailing. There are cute playsuits for the young, and retro style dresses for the young at heart. There are bold prints in the brightest of primary colours, and plenty to admire for those loving this season’s ice cream shades. As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life, and is totally at the heart of this collection.

Do you like what you are hearing? If you do, you may well be tempted to add a few pieces to your wardrobe this week, taking advantage of a special Spring mid-season event which is taking up to 30% off everything that is currently available online. This could be the perfect time to get a last-minute Mother’s Day present, or even an early Easter present for someone who is strictly off chocolate. Or maybe treat yourself – you know you deserve it.
