2016 Met Gala – The best dresses
My favourite fashion event of the year is always the Met Gala, every single fashion icon and model worth their salt turn out in a string of unforgettable looks, which set Twitter and the fashion magazines and websites alight. Every year there is a theme that corresponds to the Metropolitan Museum’s exhibition, this year the theme was ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.’ Unfortunately, this theme led to some of the worst dresses and looks I have ever seen at a Met Gala – when someone on Twitter asked the theme I said ‘Beautiful people – bad dresses’ and got a lot of agreement.
The principal problem seemed that everyone had either been dressed by Louis Vuitton, and looked frankly horrendous, with Michelle Williams and Alicia Vikander key examples of really ugly dresses on gorgeous women. The second problem was that everyone had looked at the theme and thought ‘metallics – that will work’, which made things a little on the dull side. People who usually impressed failed to, including Sarah Jessica Parker as Little Bo Peep, Beyonce in what looked like an embellished condom, Taylor Swift in a cheap looking 80s roller disco queen frock, and Selena Gomez, who took a pretty dress and added bondage gear. The bad looks kept coming and coming, Saoirse Ronan seemed to be wearing a Joan Rivers Cast off, Emma Watson had draped her coat around her trousers, Zayn Malik was wearing Iron Man style arm pieces and as for Madonna and Katy Perry, one had her ass on show (again!!!!) and one was channeling Marge Simpson – less said.
But there were some beautiful looks too, with my best dressed being the exquisite Poppy Delevingne in Marchesa. She looked so stunning in a heavily embellished silver gown that was just beautiful. I also loved Kate Bosworth in the sort of couture gown that could never be created by a machine, even in our modern age – surely a good tie in with the theme. A special mention must also go to the incredible gown worn by Claire Danes, and designed by Zac Posen, this is a stunning Cinderella style dress that, quite literally, lit up the red carpet. A simply stunning design.

Considering the theme, I have to say I’m disappointed so many people played it safe. They all look fabulous though. I loved the dress Anna Wintour wore!
