Kate at the Millies..So stunning in McQueen
I love velvet at Christmas, every year I dig out a vintage black velvet Laura Ashley skirt to wear over the festive season. It just seems the perfect fabric to wear at this time of year – luxurious, expensive and a little bit baroque. So I was overjoyed tonight to see the Duchess of Cambridge chose a black velvet Alexander McQueen gown for The Military Awards.
This is definitely amongst my favourite Kate looks ever. The exquisite gown was strapless, with a fantail style hemline, and had a feel of Lady Diana Spencer at Goldsmith Hall in 1981 to it. Diana was criticised on that occasion for showing too much cleavage and also for wearing black, a colour the Royal’s often reserve for mourning. But Kate has avoided the Diana cleavage spill, for although the dress is strapless, it is not low fitting, hence saving the blushes.
Everything about Kate was flawless tonight, her hair was glossy and always looks beautiful when worn loose, her make-up was perfect, and the necklace she accessorised with was eye-catching and added just a touch of colour. This is a look that is meeting with universal approval, it just seems so right for the Duchess to end the year with a touch of McQueen.
