Paloma Faith in Wolverhampton – Diva Fever.

Fashion-mommy’s favourite Diva hit Wolverhampton Civic Hall tonight, and that meant a night out without the Baba. This was actually a much-needed blessing in disguise has Baba has hit the terrible tutu’s (22 months that is) and is refusing to go to sleep, day or night. So Fashion-Mommy threw on her glad rags, grab her leopard print t-bars and red lippy, and went with Hubby to see the wonderful Paloma Faith whilst Nanna and grandad looked after a somewhat truculent Baba.

Fashion-Mommy loves dressing up, and has Paloma is one of my favourite style icons, an effort had to be made. Neat black pencil skirt with a puff sleeved lace top, also in black, were teamed with fishnets and the said leopard print t-bar heels. (Please note – only one piece of leopard print – I follow my own style rules!) A tiered Kookai lace bag(an Ebay bargain for 99p!!!) completed the look.

The Civic Hall was packed to the rafters, with the audience set  for an excellent night of music and style. The support act was rising star Eliza Doolittle, who looked cute in denim hot pants and a gingham shirt tied at the waist. Her catchy hits ‘Skinny jeans‘ and ‘pack up’ were met with roars of approval, and she made the evening get off to a great start.

When the curtain finally arose on Paloma at 9.00pm, Fashion-Mommy was totally stunned. The usually dull Civic Hall stage had been transformed. There was a staircase with cascading flowers, a beautiful white baby grand piano and Paloma herself, standing astride the piano. She looked amazing, in a blue and black flamenco style  strapless evening dress that paid tribute to her Spanish roots. Her trademark head wear was in evidence, a canary yellow headband with a large bow and veil. She was supported by a modern version of The Supremes, three stunning backing singers in feathered black mini dresses, gorgeous Mary Janes with tottering heels, and a really cute vintage suitcase.

The songs were performed in fabulous style. Paloma has bags of energy and a fine line in arm actions and mannerisms, in some ways performing to her songs in the style of a mime artist. This seems to echo her beginnings in Burlesque and cabaret, and also her talents as an actress, she truly performs each song.

A funked up version of ‘Do you want the truth or something beautiful?’ led to a costume change. Paloma returned for the second half in a tiny corset/playsuit, with a fashion forward jacket, with amazing padded shoulders, and another little 40’s style hat. Hats and head pieces were very much in vogue with the audience too. There were mini top hats worn jauntily, pretty bows that secured side partings, headbands with all manner of sequins and feathers. I wore a pretty large corsage on one side of my head.

The music was frankly amazing, with Paloma performing a range of her old favourites, new songs (My Cellulite went down a storm with the crowd) and cover versions. A stunning, uncensored version of Cee Lo Green’s ‘forget you’ was a particular highlight.

The show finished with my favourite Paloma song, a rousing version of the sublime ‘New York’. The audience was still singing it as they flooded towards the exits…
