Downton and Strictly herald the return of the fringe
It’s that time of year again. The night’s may be drawing in and the days getting shorter and darker, but they are also filled with sparkle, shimmer and…fringes. Autumn sees the return of two of the most glamorous programmes on television, Downton Abbey and Strictly Come Dancing, and with the return of these programmes we also see the welcome re-emergence of the flapper dress, and those fabulous fringes. Flapper dresses, the standout piece of 1920s style, is a perennial party favourite, with those long fringes perfect for those who love to standout on the dance floor. This is highlighted no better than on Strictly Come Dancing, where Alison Hammond, Caroline…

Channel Christmas Downton with Miss Selfridge
Downton Abbey is one of the jewels in the ITV Christmas offering, showing on the evening of Christmas Day, and always much-anticipated. This years episode promises to be a sparkling affair, with the official ‘coming out’ and presentation to Royalty of Lady Rose. This means a chance to drool over a splendid range of beaded and glittering 1920s fashions, gorgeous flapper frocks, jewelled headbands and glam gloves and shoes. Miss Selfridge is this season taking us back to Winter’s past with a stunning party range that has a definite vintage feel. Of course, that has to include dresses that are just perfect if you are coming over all decadence and…

Downton Bows out – Now steal the flapper look
The current series of Downton Abbey came to an end last night. This series had been set in the decade known as the roaring 20s and had allowed flapper fashions to light up our Sunday evenings. The looser styles, drop waisted cuts and a mixture of both deep shades and nude peaches and creams had shown that the style of the 1920s can fit all moods and occasions. Maybe that is why there are so many 1920s style dresses available this Christmas. And whilst the fallacy is that this is a style only made for extremely boyish figures, the reality is somewhat different. I myself wore the beautiful Evans Gatsby…

The Gucci Dress everyone wants to wear.
This season there has been one dress that everyone has wanted to wear. From the fabulous Florence Welch, to Zoe Saldana, and by way of Evan Rachel Wood and Camilla Belle, this dress has graced a host of show-business parties, sometimes at exactly the same time. I am of course talking about the Gucci, Boardwalk Empire inspired flapper dress, with its striking Art Deco style gold and black colouring, and with its shimmering fringing that just evokes images of girls with Marcel Waved hair, Mary Jane shoes and bathtub and bottle parties. This is the sort of dress that made the 1920s roar, and I absolutely love it. The High…

Wallis 1923 collection – beautiful retro styles.
After the gorgeous 1950s printed Summer dresses, Wallis are again raiding their vast archives to bring vintage chic to the High Street. This time they have looked to two very different eras in terms of style, the 1920s and the 1960s. I absolutely adore the 1920s collection which just screams GLAMOUR. The 1920s era encapsulates decadent vintage glamour. Wallis has taken inspiration from the Jazz Age for its 1920s evening dress collection. This has been inspired by sketches recovered from the Wallis archives and also by the Speakeasy bars evoked in Boardwalk Empire. The gold boardwalk dress evokes the glamour of the period with its rouching, bead work detailing and…
