World Blood Donor Day – Safe Blood for Saving Mothers
Saturday 14th of June is World Blood Donor Day, which this year has a focus on safe blood for saving mothers. Even in these modern times, childbirth can still be an extremely dangerous time for women, particularly in the Third World. Every day, about 800 women die from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications. This can be severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth, and I speak from my own experience when I say that what should be the happiest moment of your life can very quickly become a living nightmare. My son Joe was born by caesarian section at 33 weeks. The operation seemed routine and I was fine in the…

Children demonstrate life difficulties after brain injuries through Art
Last week saw a very poignant and special art exhibition take place in the Town Hall Hotel, Bethnal Green in London. The exhibition was of artwork produced by a group of artists who happened to be children and teenagers with an acquired brain injury, and the paintings were an illustration of the difficulties they face in their everyday life. The art project was organised by Child Brain Injury Trust for Action for Brain Injury Week, and was supported by law firm Bolt Burdon Kemp. The idea behind it was to illustrate that children and teenagers with acquired brain injuries experience difficulties in doing every day tasks that mean things we…

Bimuno can ease the symptons of IBS
I can speak from my own experience when I say that digestive health problems have the ability to completely blight your life. I was diagnosed with Colitis in 2006, after a period of debilitating stomach cramps, chronic diarrhea and general stomach discomfort. The diagnosis gave my illness a name and a label, but did nothing to take away the stress and worry this illness caused me, I was too frightened to eat out in case I had an attack of the killer cramps. Colitis attacks in flare-ups, so I can go through periods of time when I feel fine, but other periods are just hell for me with constant discomfort…

Laser Eye Surgery from Optical Express
I’m diabetic (not sure if I’ve ever mentioned it before but I am), and one of the side effects of diabetes can be problems with your eyesight. I have to have my eyes tested on a fairly regular basis to see how my sugar levels are affecting my sight. These are usually fairly routine, a bit unpleasant, but my eyes have been in generally good condition. But, during my most recent tests it became clear there had been some deterioration to my eye sight since the time of the last test, not terribly serious at the moment, but likely to increase in severity as time goes on. I’m not ashamed…

Why I’m supporting Stoptober
This is an unusual subject for me to tackle, about as far away from the glamour of fashion and beauty as you can get. But this is a subject close to my heart, and a campaign that I fully support for personal reasons as well as logical ones. October has been rechristened Stoptober in tribute to the NHS campaign aimed at getting people to stop smoking for the month of October, in the hope that this will lead to people stopping completely. After all, if you can quit for a whole month, why not just quit altogether. The reality is, that for some people, smoking is a habit that is…
