A little black dress and a pair of red shoes

Trends come and trends go, but a little black dress is a timeless classic, destined to be around forever. It is a piece of clothing that will take you to any occasion (even acceptable for weddings these days) and it is something that never looks anything less than chic. We all agree that Coco Chanel was a fashion genius, but maybe her greatest gift to the world was making the little black dress something much more than funeral attire.

I don’t think I could count the amount of black dresses that I own, for both every day wear and evening attire. My latest favourite is the Lovedrobe pleated lace dress from JD Williams, a piece that manages to combine style and comfort beautifully in one elegant dress. This dress combines so many of my favourite features – lace, stretch fabric, a pleated skirt in a midi length, and a v neck style to balance out a bigger bust

This dress is really lovely, with close attention needed for the lace fabric, it is just so beautiful. The lace is layered over a block coloured lining in polyester that is again stretchy, making it comfortable to wear.

The Fabric is super pretty

The dress has a very vintage feel, with lots of echoes of the 1950s ‘New Look’ styles. There is a keyhole fastening on the back of the dress, but no fiddly side zips or fastenings, you can simply put this on by pulling it over your head, a real good point if you are in a hurry and trying to throw something on and leave quickly.

I really love this dress and how it makes me feel wearing it. It has such a glamorous, old Hollywood style to it, perfect for occasions when you really want to dress up. I have wore this dress on two different occasions, for the premiere of ‘The Red Shoes’ at the Birmingham Hippodrome (where I teamed it with red shoes and bag and won free cocktails for best dressed.) I also wore it for Valentine’s Day, where I continued the red shoes theme with Westwood Melissa’s and a vintage faux fur stole. I think the dress could be teamed with accessories of many different colours, as well as metallics for an updated look.

JD Williams have a great range of dresses that start at size 8 and go up to a size 34, which is brilliant. If you are looking for a dress for a particular occasion this year I would well recommend taking a look.

Little black dresses under £30

[affilinet_performance_ad size=468×60]

It’s 80 years since Coco Chanel decided that black should not just be confined to mourning and funerals and thus created one of the most iconic fashion items of all time – the Little Black dress. Since then, this item has become the stuff of legends, with more iconic, immortal reincarnations worn by the likes of Audrey Hepburn (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), Princess Diana (that famous dress which stole the thunder from Prince Charles), Angelina Jolie (that dress which made a sticking out leg pose an internet sensation) and Demi Moore (worth a million dollars in ‘Indecent Proposal’.

The little black dress comes in all shapes and sizes, from a simple shift shape to a flattering maxi dress. It can be long sleeved or strapless, a flirty mini worn by a teen, or a sleek evening dress worn by a celeb. It is still the colour of choice for funerals, but is more often than not to be the choice for evening wear, since it is the epitome of sophistication and effortless chic. It can be minimal and classic, or adorned by a statement necklace for the ultimate in glamour.

With Christmas season upon us, it is fitting that Little black dresses are having a style moment – not that they ever went away of course. So this post is dedicated to a feast of little black dresses which have one subtle difference. None of the styles chosen cost more than £30. Effortless style on a shoestring – what’s not to love?

Style Focus – Bella Hadid

It’s probably safe to say that Gigi Hadid is still the better known model and sister, especially after her relationship with Zayn Malik. But when it comes to flawless style, I think younger sister and fellow model Bella is absolutely killing it at the moment. With her beautiful, slightly gothic/Morticia looks (think young Angelica Houston crossed with Rooney Mara), and her pared back style which seems to feature all colours, as long as they are a shade of black, Bella has been quietly making fashion waves and winning plaudits for her choices.

Bella is one half of a stylish duo, with her boyfriend The Weekend, proving to be perfect foil for her sexy elegance. On the red carpet they make a striking couple, and totally complement each other in the same way as Posh and Becks and Brad and Angelina do. At the Grammy’s they were the best dressed couple by an absolute mile, and although Bella’s dress showed acres of flesh, by leaving off the jewellery and adornments, the look was classy, not trashy, with perfect sleek hair and make-up.

Bella does occasionally opt for colour, but like Angelina Jolie before her, she just seems to shine brighter when she opts for black with minimal accessories. Her look keeps her looking distinct from her California blonde sister, and gives her an identity that is totally her own, stunning, a little mysterious and a glorious combination that seems to be elegant and chic, but very sexy, all at the same time.

I think Bella is a style icon to watch. What do you think of her style?
