Pink and blue floral pleated dress from Yours Clothing

I think it is true that most of us have comfort zones when it comes to clothing. There are just things that we gravitate to, we feel comfortable wearing certain things, and they become an easy option. But sometimes we see an item that we just fall in love with, even though it may not be something we would usually choose. That is how I felt about the Pink and Blue floral pleated dress from Yours Clothing.

It has to be said this is not the sort of dress that I would normally choose, mainly because it is strapless. I always worry about strapless dresses – I have a big bust and therefore fear that the support is not going to be sufficient. But this dress is just so beautiful, with a lovely knee-length, full pleated skirt and a glorious, summer ready print, that when I was offered the chance to review something from Yours Clothing, this is the dress I chose.

DSCN7249I was not disappointed with this dress, it is absolutely beautiful, truly something special. The back of the dress has an elasticized panel which makes it easy to get on, and ensures it stays in the right place. The bust is padded and has a lovely sweetheart style neckline that is not too low and revealing, making this a great choice for a summer wedding or garden party. The PU band around the waist helps give the dress definition, acting in the same way a sash belt would, but just adding a slight edge to the prettiness. Fully lined and with a stunning, pleated full skirt, this dress does make you feel very glamorous and princessy.

I styled my dress two ways. As the perfect dress for a wedding, I added nude accessories to balance out the gorgeous colours. For a more casual look, I wore this with a denim jacket and flat pumps. I think it works both ways.

I’m looking forward to wearing this dress on my upcoming holidays with some jewelled sandals and a statement necklace. I just love this dress – I think it may now be the prettiest dress I own.

With thanks to Yours Clothing for the dress for review.

BHS new season dresses – from casual to glamour

In recent years, BHS has really upped its game when it comes to clothing. No longer the place you visit for homewares and bedding, BHS now has a great range of fashion looks, as well as concessions in store that stock other Arcadia brands, Wallis and Dorothy Perkins.

With the new Spring/Summer ranges now just appearing in stores, now is a good time to examine what BHS has to offer. I’m pleased to say that the collection is really lovely, offering a dress for all occasions. There are some very pretty, retro inspired sun dresses, the candy striped shirt dress in bubblegum pink is a lovely piece that will be cool on warm, sunny days. I love the denim shirt dresses and simple, short sleeved shirt styles – I have featured the black, which I think would look fabulous with tan or gold gladiator style sandals, but this also comes in crisp white and navy.

There are also some lovely prom styles, full skirted dresses that are feminine and gorgeous. Happily, some of these have been designed with petite ladies in mind, which I know from speaking to a good friend, is often a bugbear, seeming to be a forgotten part of the female population. There are also simple shift styles, like the Ochre shift dress. These would be perfect for work in the summer, again looking fabulous with sandals on those lovely warm days we are sure to be looking forward to. (Fingers, toes and everything else crossed on that front.)

Here are my top ten picks from the current collection – what do you think?

Harvey Nichols hosts a secret fashion show

DSCN6511

A secret destination for a very special show

Last Wednesday saw a very special, clandestine fashion show held in Birmingham. Harvey Nichols, based in Birmingham’s Mailbox, is known for bringing style and panache to their shows. The A/W 2013/4 show was a large and lavish affair, with more than 600 attendees. But current renovation work at the Mailbox necessitated a rethink, and the Harvey Nicks team did not disappoint. Moving on from the grand spectacle of last year, we were treated to an intimate affair that was quite literally the hottest ticket in town. Top secret, there were no tweets or posts until the very day, and 600 guests were replaced by a guest list of just 120 – consisting of celebrities, valued customers, and a few invited bloggers. The venue was also a secret, with guests literally being escorted to the surprise venue, a disused building on John Bright Street that had a cool industrial New York air, especially with the soft lighting and neon signs.

And, of course, there was the clothes…

Birmingham Harvey Nichols is one of the smaller boutique stores in the HN family at present, but is able to offer the full Harvey Nichols collection. This full collection was what the audience lapped up, with the cream of the fashion world on display.  Peter Pilotto, Dries Van Noten, Mary Katrantzou, Victoria Beckham, Markus Lupfer, Thakoon, Roksanda Ilincic, Proenza Schouler and JW Anderson – it was like a roll call of all that is fresh and vibrant in fashion in the 21st Century. Add in classic pieces from Givenchy, Diane Von Furstenberg and Roland Mouret, and you have one seriously hot show.

Here are just a few of the key looks.

Of course, following on from the fashion, there was an after show party, this started with more Champagne and goody bags back at the Mailbox store, and then an after- after show party at Malmaison. Unfortunately, being a school night, I didn’t do the second party, but did enjoy a little tipple and chat with my fave bloggers back at the store.
