Fashion accessories which always work

Creating a unique and impeccable outfit is a big challenge especially with regard to accessories. The reason for that is simple: Some accessories just do not fit the personal style and one has to change them with every outfit. Yet, there are also some fashion items which always work as accessories because they do not simply look gorgeous and timeless, but also fulfill a function beyond embellishing their wearer.

Trends 2012/2013

It is always worth looking at what key designers and celebrities have created and worn at the latest fashion shows in order to find the perfect functional accessory for oneself. Two women who have roused attention this year are Kate Bosworth and Victoria Beckham. In Kate’s collection, bags play an important role. Indeed, you cannot go wrong with these trustworthy companions no matter what you are wearing. They keep the purse, the mobile phone and the makeup safe inside and individualize the personal look through either classic leather cuts and twists or colorful prints. Another accessory which needs no excuse at all is a wristwatch. There are classic designer pieces like luxurious Omega watches which embellish the wrist and are always ready to tell their wearer the time at one glance. The jewels, the silver and golden watch cases, the leather straps and the classic designs of these timepieces also have a further advantage: They are often not immediately perceived as accessories, but add an air of seriousness to the wearer.

Functional fashion

As accessories can be functional, fashion can be functional too. In the approaching winter seasonal scarves, gloves and hats in bi-colored patterns will be keeping many people’s necks, hands and heads warm. Since these can be exchanged and combined in various ways, these fashion items can be viewed as perfect accessories as well.

Victoria Beckham S/S 13 – good, but not great.

The latest collection from Victoria Beckham proved to be a further departure from the Roland Mouret style designs that made her name. Sure, there are some form fitting gowns, but these owe more to the minimalist, lingerie style designs of Calvin Klein than to the hourglass fifties silhouette of Mouret.

I have to say I was a little disappointed by this collection on the whole. The form fitting lingerie style dresses look a little dated, and a little cheap, whilst the short a-line skirts and crisp shirts just got me thinking ‘so what’. They are well cut, as you would expect, but they don’t stand out as spectacular.

That’s not to say there isn’t merit in the collection. I love the use of a palette of black, white and vibrant orange, and there are some gorgeous additions of sheer, lace effect panels which move the illusion dress onto a much more classy plane. The sleek midi skirts teamed with white shirts are also very good – perfect for Tilda Swinton and Care Blanchett in their sophistication.

But nude dresses have been done to death by Herve Leger, and do we really need to elevate the bra strap showing to High Fashion – I think not. Furthermore, whilst I love the Tuxedo style black blazer and cigarette pants, styling this with a multi ways bra just gives this the look of a Madonna tour costume from 1993.

So, for me, this collection is good, but not great.I prefer Victoria’s designs that flatter rather than flaunt, designs that seem a little bit more grown up than this.

Jessica Ennis – Queen of the World

Jessica Ennis is on top of the world right now, the Golden girl of sport with a gold medal to prove it. And it seems that sport is not the only area in which Jessica is excelling – showing herself to be no slouch in the style stakes either. Blessed with a glorious figure and a beautiful face, it would be hard for Jessica to look anything less than stunning, but her style choices have met with universal approval.

From Victoria Beckham on the Jonathan Ross show, to Alexander McQueen in salmon pink, Jessica has shown her style is ladylike and classic. She chooses knee length skirts, but varies the silhouette – from skater style skirts to very sexy pencil styles. She embraces a colour palette that makes the clothes visually interesting – not all little black dresses for this lady – and then leaves the trainers behind to enhance each outfit with a killer heel.

I think it is wonderful that so many young girls are already citing Jessica as an inspiration, her healthy, sporty physique is a fabulous thing for young girls to see as an ideal. And with Jessica showing that her off track style is impressive as her track performance, I hope she is one trendsetter who we will be talking about for a very long time.
