The Golden Globes – my fave looks.
It was the Golden Globes last night, awards season finally started. But, to be fair, It wasn’t a vintage night style wise. So many of my favourite ladies (Amy Adams, Sandra Bullock, Drew Barrymore and many, many more) wore dresses that made me despair and say aloud ‘All those dresses and you chose that.’
Paula Patton came dressed as a giant marshmallow. Lena Dunham picked a Zac Posen dress of a beautiful citrus yellow shade that looked so tight and uncomfortable she seemed unable to stand up straight in it. It reminded me of the Granville/Arkwright exchange in ‘Open all Hours’ when Granville calls his outfit something he just ‘threw on’, and Arkwright quips that he missed. Usually reliable Taylor Swift and Hayden Panettiere were safe and boring in Carolina Herrera and Tom Ford respectively. And Emma Watson, gorgeous, fun Emma Watson, turned up in something that looked suspiciously like a pair of leggings. So not a good look. Ever.
I could go on in this vein, but instead I want to focus on some of the dresses I really, truly loved. Starting with the wonderful, exquisite and frankly blow everyone else off the red carpet perfection of Lupita Nyong’u in Ralph Lauren.
Tomato red, with minimal accessories, and a cape effect, this was the dress of the night. Nupita is fast becoming the one to watch on the red carpet. This did remind me of when Gwyneth wore a cape to the Oscars in 2012, and with Amy Adams also rocking a cape on the Golden Globes carpet, and Sharon Stone also sporting the look recently, I’m seeing the start of a very elegant trend.

Next up is the almost regal elegance of Cate Blanchett in gothic black lace from Armani Prive.Cate is very much a ‘movie star’ in the old sense of the word, and a true fashion original. On the night she won the award for Best Actress for her role in Blue Jasmine, Cate reminded me of Joan Fontaine, in both dress style and with her chic blonde hair.

Olivia Wilde was another lady who was definitely a smash hit in her Gucci sequined gown. The pregnant actress went for a glossy and glamorous ‘blingy’ look and just glittered and glowed on the red carpet. Again, there were elements of deja vu to this dress. The very classic style reminded me of two previous Golden Globe dresses, this time worn by Angelina Jolie and Anne Hathaway. In fact, if these two dresses matted, I think you’d get Olivia’s dress.
Olivia’s dress
Reminds me of these previous Golden Globes Dresses

Another pregnant lady = another hit. The lovely Kerry Washington went for custom made Balenciaga. Her look was simple, fresh and had an early 1960s vibe. Another hit.
The E! Channel coverage didn’t really feature Kate Beckinsale, but the Zuhair Murad metallic showstopper was both beautiful and fitted the actress perfectly. With Sofia Vergara opting for a ballgown, Kate was the Queen of the fishtail on Golden Globes night.
Naomi Watts is always a safe guess for best dressed on any awards night. She looked sensational in a shimmering nude/gold dress from Tom Ford. Minimal accessories and sleek hair completed a great look.
I just love everything about Sofia Vergara, but this years dress was actually a pleasant surprise, as the actress went for a princess style ballgown rather than her trusty fishtail silhouette. She was divine in classic black Zac Posen, and adding a dramatic necklace in turquoise was a masterstroke.
I know opinions were divided about Zooey Deschanel, but I loved the romance and vintage feel of her Oscar De La Renta ‘mullet’ gown. The beading required you to look again and again. Prettiness personified.
Margot Robbie may have had quite a few people shouting who? before the ceremony, but one slinky walk up that red carpet, in that impeccable Gucci dress, and that is most certainly no longer the case. The dress and the look had me thinking this is the modern version of the Hitchcock Blonde.

Imagine getting your pick of dresses!! Love the ballgown effect from Sofia Vergara but not in love with the top of the dress. Margot Robbie was stunning, but my favourite was Emma Watson, such a style statement! Love looking at all the dresses:)

Have to agree to disagree on Emma. From the front I thought she looked amazing, but hated the gimmicky back. If that dress had just had the low back and not the trousers, she would probably have been in my top 3.

Tbh I love gwyneth’s classic look from 2012. I love Olivia’s green sequin number from this year. Can’t beat Gucci x

Gucci did really well this year. Classic Hollywood looks.

Love all the picks except for Zoe – I think it’s her more than it is the dress. How about worst dressed? I have to say Paula Patton.

Paula Patton is just such a beautiful woman and she chose to wear that? What a disaster.
