Ashton Double bill sparkles at Birmingham Hippodrome
Spring season came to the Birmingham Hippodrome last night with the opening of the Birmingham Royal Ballet’s latest offerings, ‘The Dream’ and ‘A Month in the Company’. This Sir Frederick Ashton double bill transported the audience to the Forest of Arden for a balletic take on ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and to Victorian Russia for a tale of forbidden romance and emotion. Two very different ballets, both totally wonderful in their own way. The Dream The classic Shakespeare story lends itself so beautifully to ballet. Titania (a stunning, ethereal Nao Sakuma) quarrels with her King Oberon, the King of the Fairies over a changeling boy who he wants to be…

Distinctive Chesterfields on Celebrity Big Brother
Another crazy season of Celebrity Big Brother ended last week, with the likeable Scotty T crowned as champion. It is a series that will go down as one of the most memorable in recent TV history, what with the death of David Bowie while his ex wife Angie was in the house (and with Tiffany thinking it was housemate David Gest that had died.). Then there was the romance between Jeremy and troubled ex Hollyoaks star Steph, and the very strange appearance of Gillian McKeith. Afternoon Tea with Tom Chambers and Charlotte Ritchie
Noel Coward’s classic farce Private Lives is coming to the Birmingham New Alex Theatre this February, and to celebrate the occasion, the theatre hosted a very special Q&A session and afternoon tea with two of the stars, Strictly winner Tom Chambers and Call the Midwife star Charlotte Ritchie. It was a lovely opportunity to learn a little more about the play, and about the life of an actor working on a play. And to eat cake, lots of lovely cake. I took my mom along for the afternoon, and we had a lovely time enjoying the charm and wit of Tom and Charlotte, who are just perfect for Noel Coward’s…

Invest in Better Speakers Your speaker system is one of the most important parts of your home entertainment system. If the only speakers you have are the ones that are attached to your TV, you are definitely not getting the best audio possible. You should, at least, invest in a subwoofer and think about creating a surround sound system. Modern speakers can be pretty small so they won’t take up much space or dominate your living room, so you won’t have to worry about that.…

Macbeth electrifies the Birmingham Rep
2016 marks the 400th year anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare. And whether you believe that the man from Stratford Upon Avon wrote the plays, or that someone else was responsible, it is true to say that an extraordinary body of work was left, with Macbeth being amongst the greatest plays. Last night a new version opened at the Birmingham Rep, one that brought the horror, intrigue and violence of ‘The Scottish Play’ kicking and screaming into the 21st century. The ancient castles of Scotland have been replaced with a claustrophobic set that resembles a wartime bunker for much of the time, and Guantanamo Bay at others. War…
