Reviewed: The Hampton Cornflower Blue Grab Bag from Yoshi Bags

Yoshi Lichfield should really be called the home of the bag. Specialising in beautiful leather bags, Yoshi is home to the classic, the elegant and the quirky. Whether you are looking for a smart work bag, a tote perfect for shopping, a shoulder bag that could also double as a clutch for a night out, or even a quirky custard cream bag that would even appeal to those with style taste slightly off the radar, Yoshi has designs for all – and every one is a beauty.

Recently, Yoshi has unveiled a glorious new colour in it’s leather collections, a stunning shade of cornflower blue. This blue leather has been used to create the Hampton collection, which incorporates a range of bags and purses. I have been using the ‘grab bag’ which is described as: “Perfect for all occasions and outfits both day and night”
and have to agree that this is a bag that is smart enough for formal or even occasions, but looks totally great with jeans and more casual wear too,

The grab bag is great, big enough to carry all your essentials – purse, keys, phone, lippie notebook, pen – all will fit easily into the middle compartment which has a zip top for security. It then has two further side compartments which close with magnetic clasps that are perfect for things like Oyster cards, train tickets or bus passes, the sort of things that you may want to grab in a hurry. Inside the middle section there are even more pockets, big enough for your mobile phone, and another zip pocket too. The whole bag is lined with a crisp blue striped fabric which gives it a slightly nautical feel, and contrasts beautifully with the cornflower blue leather of the bag.

The dimensions of the bag are Height 23 cm, Width 33 cm and Depth 10 cm, and as I show above, it can work with a range of colours and outfit styles. The bag comes in one of the Yoshi dust bags which make it a perfect gift idea for a birthday or Christmas, and, as this is such a classic style, you know it is a gift that will be used forever more.

Yoshi Bags – The Borden Scuba Leather Shopper Bag

When it comes to bags, my mantra is the bigger the better. I seem to be one of those people who transfer my whole life around with me, so I love a nice tote or shopper style bag to do this in. If I can add the element of a beautiful, bright colour to the mix, then I have the perfect bag that suits both my personality and my lifestyle. One of my main ports of call for this kind of bag is Yoshi Lichfield, a company which is local to me as it is based in Lichfield, and designs the most incredible and unusual range of leather bags and accessories.

I have been using Yoshi Bags for almost a year now (you can read a previous review here), and I have loved the style, quality and practicality of the designs. For Spring I wanted to get a design that could be versatile, something that could be worn with both jeans for the school run, and a dress for the weekend. I wanted a structured bag that wouldn’t sink or fall when I placed it on the floor, and I wanted it to be in leather so that ageing would only make it look even better. The bag I chose was the Borden Scuba Leather Shopper – classic in shape and design, but in a stunning colour that was sure to instantly catch the eye.

The Borden Scuba is quite a retro style bag, unlined, but with a contrast brown leather lining.  The bag is handmade, and has a small Yoshi logo on the back, and a Yoshi tag on the front. The handles are long enough to make this a tote style – they don’t extend or shorten but this isn’t a problem as I feel they are the correct length for holding this bag comfortably. The bag is also a tote style that has no zip or fastening, so it is easy access for you when you are looking for something quickly. If you have one eye on security, you could use the beautiful drawstring dustbag that the design comes in as an inner layer – it fits into the bag perfectly.

This is a beautifully made bag, with a lovely neat finish. It is a perfect go to bag, and the style could even make it a great holiday bag. One thing I would mention is that the blue is slightly different in the flesh – it is more of a teal shade than the stonewashed denim of the image above – I believe this is due to the leather, and I personally love the teal.

A must have product that every well dressed woman needs is a good leather handbag. Once upon a time the rule was that the bag must be black – elegant and timeless, a piece that would only look better as it aged. But Yoshi Lichfield, a company which combines Osaka based inspiration with classic British design, offer sound proof that these days colour rules when it comes to making a statement with your leather handbag.

Yoshi bags are a company that are actually based just up the road from me, in Lichfield, Staffordshire. They design bags to die for, with clutch styles, satchels, holdalls and messenger bags – they even have a collection based on the nation’s favourite biscuits, with a Bourbon body bag/clutch so realistic you could find yourself nibbling corners when the hunger pangs hit. Yoshi bags use great quality leather in a brilliant range of bright and beautiful colours;- blues and green, fig and tan, red and mushroom shades. My personal shade though, is the lovely mustard yellow.

I was asked to choose a bag from the wide Yoshi range to review, and, of course, I opted for the Starley Saffron leather Hobo bag, from the Carnaby Collection.  This is a stunning, everyday bag that is big enough to comfortably carry all those essential items. This bag has a slouchy design, making it something that you can carry whilst wearing your jeans and casual clothing.

The bag has a zip top fastening. Inside the bag there is a  zipped pocket for additional security, a slip pocket which would be great for storing Oyster cards and bus/train passes and a mobile phone pocket.

The bag uses the softest Nappa leather which makes it really supple, it is also fully lined which just adds to that feeling of quality. The Yoshi Lichfield signiature is embossed on the front of the bag, but this is not ostentatious, but done in a classy, discreet way.

The bag has a handle, but also comes with an additional extended strap. It also has a beautiful duster bag with a lovely printed design – think Orla Kiely style prints.  And, as for the colour, it is just lovely, and can be matched to quite a few different outfits, with both matching and clashing colours.
