Favourite looks from the Elle Style Awards

Tonight saw a whole host of stylish ladies attending the Elle Style Awards. One of the most respected of all style awards, this year saw luminaries like Emma Watson, Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, Suki Waterhouse and Cara Delevingne amongst the ladies in attendance.  With a guest list like this, we were promised some interesting looks at the very least, and unfortunately, it has to be said that most of the looks on display were to be admired for being interesting, rather than actually looking that good.

Cara seemed to be dressed in a black satin dressing gown, Jessie J was basically beyond words and Ellie was again sans knickers and flashing the flesh, this time in a Matthew Williamson catsuit which I quite liked, but do feel we have seen before on Ellie. Luckily, there were some looks that were successful, including Sophie Ellie Bextor in William Vintage, and a very glamorous Lily Allen in form-fitting Roland Mouret.

Here are the looks that I rated.

Suki Waterhouse in Burberry

I think she has looked great of late, and this understated look from Suki plays up her natural 1960s style beauty.

Felicity Jones

I’m a real fan of Felicity’s pretty prom style, she reminds me of Zooey Deschanel. This dress is just lovely, I love the hot pink shade which is great against her dark hair.

Olga Kurylenko

Olga is fast becoming a style star who never puts a foot wrong. I love the fabric of this dress and the multi strap detail. I would’ve preferred a silver strappy shoe, but that is a minor moan, Olga does look fabulous.

Amber Le Bon

Amber kept it short and sassy in a black beaded dress. I love that she kept her hair up and left the jewellery at home. Also loving the silver accessories.

Sophie Ellis Bextor

I’m always a sucker for vintage, and Sophie is one of the key purveyors of the retro look. This is Grace Kelly ice blue, and I love the simple style. Adding the quirky dotted shoes was a masterstroke and true to Sophie’s kooky roots.

Kim Kardashian and Vera Wang – a marriage made in fashion heaven.

Following the royal brides (Kate, Zara and Charlene), the rock royalty brides (Kate, Lily), the film royalty brides(Reese), we now await the reality tv royalty bride, the very beautiful Kim Kardashian. Kim is plighting her troth on Saturday to her beau, New Jersey Nets star Kris Humphries. And who else would America’s top reality tv star choose to  create her dress but the true queen of bridal couture Vera Wang?

Kim is one of the most beautiful women on TV at the moment, and there is no doubt she will make a stunning bride. But what sort of dress will she plump for? Could we look for clues in the dresses that Vera has created for other celebrity brides, including sister Khloe? Will Kim plump for a full skirt, or a fishtail skirt that would totally accentuate those curves. Vera is known for strapless designs, she used these in the dresses she designed for Victoria Beckham, Jessica Simpson, Alyssa Milano and Chelsea Clinton amongst others, so maybe Kim Will plump for this style.

Chelsea Clinton in Vera Wang

So, Kim could go down what could be seen as the traditional Vera Wang route in a strapless dress with a  full skirt. But wedding dresses in 2011 have seen a move towards vintage styles that ark back to our marital past. Kate Middleton‘s dress was an echo of the dresses worn by Princess Margaret and Grace Kelly, whilst Lily Allen and Kate Moss looked to the 1920s for inspiration, particularly for their veils. Full,  lace sleeves are also becoming popular as they add princess elegance to the occasion. Vera Wang has been known to channel that particular kind of elegance, just look at the beautiful dresses she designed for Ivanka Trump and Jennifer Lopez.

I would love to see Kim step away from the traditional Ver Wang mode and wear something elegant. Fashion Police star Guilliana Rancic says that she likes to see Kim dressed like a ‘hoochie’, but I think it would be wonderful if Kim stepped outside her image for her big day.

Jessica Alba: Perfect Maternity Style

It has certainly been the year of the bump, from Victoria Beckham to Danielle Lloyd via Selma Blair, Lily Allen and Kate Hudson, it’s seemed like everyone is pregnant.

But my nomination for best dressed bump has to be Jessica Alba. She seems to have looked effortlessly stylish throughout her pregnancy, adopting a series of maxi dresses and skirts,  pretty cotton sundresses, and customised Diane Von Furstenberg brights in order to remain supremely fashionable throughout her term.

Dressing stylishly isn’t always easy when you’re pregnant, swelling boobs and ankles, and the effect of a beach ball under your dress means that you seriously have to adapt from your normal style, (no-one does a Nenah Cherry these days!). Jessica has ditched the heels for most occasions, and instead wears simple but pretty pieces that look great, but are also practical and comfortable.

It’s a masterclass in maternity dressing that moms-to-be could do far worse than look to for inspiration. With maternity lines on the High Street improving all the time (love Mamas and Papas and Red Herring in particularly). Fashionista  bump  dressing is now something to look forward to.
