M&S Picks for the party season

It seems strange when we look back on Marks and Spencer from the 1980s and 1990s. It had become a shop that was synonymous with grandma fashion. The place you could look for a good quality pair of trousers with an elasticated waist, a soft knit cardi or jumper, and of course, the only place to go for big knickers or a bra fitting. It was practical and reliable, but fashionable was not a word you would ever use to describe it.

But that was then. In recent years M&S woke up. We had the much anticipated adverts containing a range of influential women from Erin O Conner to Twiggy. Then we had the must buy pieces, the much lusted after pink coat, and the a-line leather skirt worn by Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo. And then we had the Archive by Alexa collection, which did split opinions but I personally loved it. M&S could not be accused of not trying to keep up with current styles and trends. The prices also seem more affordablenow, although you can make this even better by searching for Marks and Spencer Voucher Codes which can guarantee you never miss a sale or promotion, or get you free delivery options.  (This may also give you a guilt free option, as My Favourite Voucher Codes donate 20% of their profits to charity. By using their voucher codes you’re donating to charity.)

The latest party collection has now been launched and it is so full of beautiful things it is basically my Autumn/Winter 2016 wishlist. It is wearable and yet so glam, drawing influences from disco and Glam Rock in the form of hot metallics, but there are also shades of folkloric, with Winter florals, long sleeves and flouncy shapes. This season’s pleats are well represented and there are also classic styles in black for those who prefer their Christmas outfits to be sleek and minimal – I’m particularly loving the black strapless jumpsuit which has shades of Victoria Beckham and Gwen Stefani about it.

Here are some of my key picks with one eye towards Winter, but another firmly looking towards Christmas and all those lovely, festive nights out.

Let me know what you think.

Archive by Alexa and Rosie’s perfume – a M&S update

Everything she touches turns to fashion gold, so letting Alexa Chung loose on the not considerable fashion archives of M&S has to be one of the best ideas ever. ‘Archive by Alexa’, which has just launched, is a collection of pieces that have been curated by Alexa, and have then been reworked, or used as inspiration for a brand new collection that is sure to appeal to fashion purists, M&S fans and Alexa fans everywhere.

I love the collection, which has the sort of retro cool feel you would expect from Alexa Chung. You can see the inspiration everywhere. The Misty tea dress is one of those 1970s takes on a 40s tea dress in the most beautiful print. The Olive slip dress is a typical minimalist 90s barely there dress, but with the addition of a really pretty print. The Ada blazer is a real 1980s, power dressing throwback, whilst the Harry Blouse has touches of 1970s Laura Ashley milkmaid meshed with Lady Diana circa 1981. I totally love it all.

Rosie for Autograph

I’m not normally a great fan of celebrity perfumes, I hated everything by Britney and JLo, and even SJP only convinced me with Covet Pure Bloom (no longer available – sob!), but the Rosie Huntington Whiteley fragrance for M&S is different. A Eau De Parfum rather than toilette, Rosie for Autograph is just lovely.

It is a floral fragrance with an topnote of rose that makes it soft and wearable for everyday. It has been blended with rose centifolia, which is beloved by perfumers as the most prestigious and exceptional of all rose fragrances. The Rose Oil is from handpicked roses from the South of France, adding a gorgeous Continental twist to this fragrance, and a stunning bottle complete with Rose gold label and top, would grace any dressing table, it is just so super pretty.

A 75ml bottle costs just £28 – an absolute bargain for Eau De Parfum, and you can currently get a free Rosie Body Cream when you buy this size.

Outfit post – January Review

I always think January is a strange month, the long comedown after the excitement of Christmas. My January consisted of trying to catch up with blogs after the break I decided to take over Christmas, and also attending events as the social calender started to take off again. This post is a bit of a mix of some of the outfits I wore for both casual and more formal occasions during the start to the year.

You will see some ever presents in the images. The yellow coat is my absolute fave at the moment, one of my Christsmas presents that cost just £25 from Primark and is already heading into bonus based on a cost per wear. The black pull on boots were a charity shop find from Next (but M&S do have exactly the same pair – I own that version in brown.) Cold mornings and need for comfort have made these another wardrobe favourite.

I have also decided that 2015 is the year that I will sort the wardrobe and try to wear things that I had forgotten about – or I’ll sell them on. The Clements Ribeiro swan dress was from the very first collection for Evans and holds lovely memories as I wore it when I interviewed Coleen Rooney (you can find that piece here). The dress is now too big, but using a vintage belt I got for 50p last year, I think it can be salvaged – thoughts?

Here are some more of the outfits that I enjoyed wearing this January.
