Friday Fashion Focus – Birkenstocks

Iconic brands of footwear? Well, there’s Jimmy Choo’s, Manolo’s, Hunter Wellies, Havainas, Stan Smith’s and Louboutin’s for starters. And, of course, when we are talking about icons of Summer footwear, we really shouldn’t miss out the original sandal that made comfort the number one concern, and won a celebrity following in the process. Of course, I am talking about Birkenstocks.

The company is a German legend. With the original flexible footbed insoles in production since 1896, Birkenstocks are now the sandals to turn to when you need your feet to be comfortable in the Summer months. With their unisex designs and their soft footbeds, Birkies are the sandals that mold themselves to your feet, ensuring that, once you have worn them in, they will be like wearing a pair of slippers. And frankly, who wouldn’t want to be in their slippers all day?

The role call of stylish celebrities who insist on Birkenstocks is like a who’s who from Vogue. Ashley Olsen, Miranda Kerr, Heidi Klum, Drew Barrymore and Alexa Chung are just a few of the ladies who pull out the trusted sandals each Summer, wearing them with everything from jeans and denim shorts, to maxi skirts and dresses. They are totally versatile and there are plenty of styles to choose from, with Jones Bootmaker having a great selection to choose from, including my personal favourite style, the Madrid, along with the Arizona and Gizah varieties.

Birkenstocks are certainly not the prettiest sandal out there, but for the beach, the school run, running daily errands, even traveling to and from work, there are certainly no sandals more practical, more comfortable or more iconic. If Alexa and Miranda think they are perfect, then who are we to argue the point?

Top Tips for Accessorising your outfits this Summer

Looking your best this summer isn’t just about finding the perfect dress or shorts and top combo. If you really want to turn heads, then you’re going to need to accessorise. By using the right kind of accessories, you can turn your outfit into something truly spectacular – an outfit that no one else will be wearing. These top tips will ensure you can accessorise any of your outfits for this summer season.

The Power of Three

The best way to stand out in a crowd with accessories is by working on three points of similarity. This basically means that you pick three key areas that will match. Any less than three and your outfit will look unfinished. Any more and you’ll look over the top. The three you pick should have the same colour or theme throughout. Pick from the following:

  • Shoes – Your shoes should be a similar tone to the hemline of your outfit. Sandals are perfect for summer. Avoid white where possible. It always looks dirty!
  • Bag – Big bags are a must-have for summer. Where else are you going to put your beach towel?! Just make sure they’re no wider than your body, from the side.
  • Belt – Wide waist belts are a great way to cinch in any floaty summer tops. Just don’t wear these if you have a wide hip and full stomach.
  • Scarf – A scarf, in summer?! Go for something floaty that can be worn loosely around your neck. Or even in your hair.
  • Earrings – Go for earrings that complement the shape of your face. For example, those with a pointy chin should avoid earrings that have a sharp point.
  • Necklace – Those with a long neck should wear short necklaces and chokers. Those with a short neck should wear longer necklaces. Simple!
  • Bracelet – Don’t fill your arm with bangles, it’s never a good look. Less is more when it comes to bracelets.

Remember, you only need to pick three and they must match in either theme or colour.

Experiment With Colour

If you’re the kind of person who likes to stick to neutral colours in their wardrobe, then accessorising is the perfect way to make an outfit pop. If you go for pastels and creams in the summer, then break it up with some rose gold accessories. If you prefer darker colours, then go for something vibrant to accessorise. Wear a plain outfit into a store and play around with all the different coloured belts, bags and shoes. Reds, yellows, blues and silvers are some of the must-wear colours for this season.

Practical Accessories

It’s a good idea to make sure you can get some practical use out of your accessories this summer. A bag big enough to carry all of your essentials is a prime example. Using one of the Shinola watches for women in place of a bracelet, is another good idea. You’re still accessorising, but you’re getting some kind of use out of the items too. This will save you from over-accessorising when you realise you still need to find a bag that matches or a watch that fits in.

Sunglasses

Finally, a real fashion must-have for summer. Not everyone knows which glasses suit them, however. It’s quite simple once you know the rules. Essentially, you should go for sunglasses that are the opposite shape to your face. If you have a round face then opt for square frames. And vice versa. You also want to make sure the top frame of your sunglasses follows the natural shape of your eyebrows. You don’t want your perfectly arched brows peeping from above a straight-lined frame.

You now have the ultimate guide to accessorising your outfits this summer. Turn those simple wardrobe staples into catwalk creations, with just a few tweaks here and there.

Shoezone review – Haute Hippie festival style

I first became a fan of Shoezone when Joe was small. They sold the cutest t-bar canvas shoes that had a real retro feel and were a total bargain (2 pairs for £8 as I recall.) I loved them, and of course I had a look at the ladies selection, and found it to be full of really pretty sandals and flat pumps, all of which were really affordable. I was converted and now regularly buy shoes from the brand.

I was recently offered the opportunity to review a pair of shoes, sandals or boots from their current lines. I was spoiled for choice, but decided that, as it was almost summer, I would opt for sandals, especially as I am now less than a month away from my summer holiday. One style just jumped out at me for the design which can definitely be classed as haute hippie, Marakesh Express influenced. This was the Lilley multi-bead t-bar sandal, and they are simply beaut!

These are just the perfect summer sandal. They would look amazing in holiday, at a summer festival, or just worn with jeans on a staycation. The synthetic gold upper is covered with gorgeous multi-colour beads which adds to the boho style, and makes them a great choice to wear for the evening too, especially on those days when it is just too warm for heels.

I think these sandals are stunning, so I wore them to channel the style of one of my fashion Icons, doomed 60s model and socialite Talitha Getty.

Pretty, hippie style sandals that are comfortable, adjustable and cost less than £15. I think these are an absolute no-brainer when it comes to both style and value, and the fact that they are light as a feather despite the beads, and are just so comfortable to wear, makes them an even more attractive proposition.
