The Oscar Fashion Awards go to…

I adore the Oscars, it is, without doubt, my favourite fashion night of the year. And, despite the fact that E! stopped the red carpet coverage before the arrival of Angelina, Gwyneth, Natalie  or Sandra, this was still a vintage night for Fashion. So, here are my very own red carpet Oscars to celebrate all that was good in the Oscar Fashion World.

Best dressed

Angelina Jolie opted for classic black Atelier Versace, but with a thigh skimming split that kept her sexy bad-girl persona in place. I loved that she went for black velvet, bringing to mind a sexy, Hollywood version of our own Kate Middleton.

Super Gwyneth looked super gorgeous in her white super hero cape from Tom Ford.This was Ice Queen perfection and I loved everything, from the Grace Kelly hair to the jewelled cuff. The one outfit that truly made me gasp on the night.

Jessica Chastain looked glorious in an ornate brocade gown from Alexander McQueen. This was a classic McQueen gown, and I think that the deep colour helped her to avoid the washed out look that sometimes ruins her choices. This was perfect – this look needed no ‘Help’. (Groan..sorry, couldn’t resist).

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji was just a masterclass in dressing a curvy figure for pure red carpet glamour. She looked incredible in this draped and beaded dress.

Viola Davis made a spectacular entrance in this vibrant green dress by Vera Wang. The colour was perfect for her, and with that fantail and  pleating detail, this dress made that body look smoking hot. Her natural hair was also a big hit.

Rose Byrne does it again in a stunning,midnight blue sequinned gown from Vivienne Westwood. Like her jumpsuit at the SAG awards, this has a 1970s feel to it. I’m developing a real style crush on Rose, I hope someone gives her a huge juicy roll this year. Imagine the dress if she was nominated.

Deja Vu award

Emma Stone turned up in a wine coloured dress by Giambattista Valli that had people saying ‘haven’t I seen that before?’ The dress, with a rather fussy bow on the neck, was very similar to a red dress that Nicole Kidman had worn to the Oscars a few years ago. I personally didn’t really like either all that much…a bit like turning yourself into a (very pretty) parcel.

Services to vintage award

Natalie Portman opted for a true vintage gown, a 1954 Dior red polka dot strapless dress that was perfect for her petite frame,but was not all that exciting. Penelope Cruz was a revelation in an exquisite baby blue dress from Armani that turned her into a brunette Grace Kelly.This was very much a Princess gown and with 1950s bangs she was almost unrecognisable.

Sandra Bullock’s Marchesa gown also had a vintage feel. This monochrome dress with strong embroidered detail looked like it could’ve belonged to Constance Bennett or Joan Crawford in the 1930s. This did divide opinion, but I think it is just elegant.

The Oscar for dressing like an Oscar award

Gold has always been a popular colour at the Oscars, with many a golden girl seeking to emulate the man they all want to go home with (Oscar..not Clooney, although…). Stacy Keibler was definitely the golden princess in a gorgeous, off the shoulder lame style dress from Marchesa. This was some dress to carry off, but the statuesque, beautiful Stacy carried it off with aplomb. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Best actress winner Meryl Streep. Her gold dress may have been Lanvin,but it reminded me of  dressing gown that previously belonged to a drag queen.

The stick to what you know award

Some actresses just stick to what they know when it comes to style. The ever elegant Michelle Williams wore red for the SAG awards, strapless for the Baftas, and then combined the two for her Oscar dress. The Louis Vuitton gown with the peplum, ruffles and frills was just beautiful.

Rooney Mara also stuck to her usual fashion formula. Yes, this was white, rather than her trademark black, but the simple silhouette, the designer (Givenchy of course) and the lack of jewels and adornment meant that this was classic Rooney.

The JLo award for services to skin…

This obviously goes to Jennifer Lopez, who showed off that amazing body in a silver/white plunging dress by Zuhair Murad. This was probably more suited to the Grammys than the Oscars, but there is no question that she looked fabulous.
