Chicago: All That Jazz At The Wolverhampton Grand
I should first of all put a disclaimer with this review. Chicago is my favourite musical of them all. It is sassy and sexy, filled with a dangerous jazz Age glamour. A mixture of a speakeasy floor show and a Busby Berkeley style musical, bursting with unforgettable characters. Last night the latest touring production opened in Wolverhampton at the Grand Theatre, with a star studded cast at the helm, showing that Chicago still has all its power and glory. All that Jazz indeed! Chicago is the story of two 1920s murderesses. It’s the height of the jazz age, when anyone can become a star, and the prohibition restraints lead to…

The Brightest Musical In Town: Hairspray Is Back With A Bang!
Big, bold, bright and beautiful and that could just be describing the leading lady Tracey Turnblad, Hairspray arrived in suitably glittering style at the Wolverhampton Grand last night, with the nicest kids in town once again proving that this is the feelgood musical to beat all others. The musical, which mixes the fun and frolics of the Corny Collins show, with the dark undercurrents of racial inequality in 1960s Baltimore, was the tonic that we all need in these increasingly dark times. As the final song exclaims, you really can’t stop the beat. Last night, Wolverhampton couldn’t stop the beat! Tracey Turnblad is a big girl growing up in 1960s…

The Baseballs in Birmingham – Rock and Roll fashion.
A look back at The Baseballs first gig in Birmingham in 2010. This article should really be titled ‘The feel good event of the year’. The Baseballs played their first concert in Birmingham tonight, and Fashion Mommy was there to enjoy the ride. For those of you who’ve spent the last few months under a rock, The Baseballs are a German Rock and Roll band who have built up a huge following with their interpretations of modern pop songs in a rock and roll stylee. They have the personal style of James Dean, with the most impressive quiffs since the Leningrad Cowboys. They are style personified, with great tunes and…

Why age no longer defines fashion.
I have the same New Look dress as Rochelle from The Saturdays. Rochelle is in her early twenties, I am in my mid 30’s. Which begs the question – am I too old for this dress, or is the dress too old for Rochelle? The answer, happily, is no on both counts. The days when shops had a clearly age defined audience have long gone, with mothers and daughters happily shopping in the same places, and sometimes buying the same things. Why is this now the case? Part of the answer to this is that women, in many cases, look younger than we did 30 years old. Thirtysomethings can often…

Charli XCX and Boohoo – latest Drop
Since she first burst onto the music scene with the extremely catchy ‘Boom Clap’, Charlie XCX has proved to be a fashion maven like no other. Her style is quirky and original, pulling ideas from a range of sources including the 1990s and early Year 2k styling, the Spice Girls at there glorious peak and the punkish edge of Courtney Love and Sioxsie Sioux. Charli has her own style and doesn’t really give a hoot for best dressed lists and minimalism. Charli XCX – Quirky Style This week has seen the launch of her second collection in collaboration with Boohoo. As with the first collection, this won’t be for everyone,…
