January Star style, featuring Madonna, Pippa, Angelina and a whole lot more.

The January blues that make the majority of us want to hibernate until at least April don’t worry the most stylish stars. For them, January signifies the start of awards season, which of course means dresses, dresses, dresses. (Unless you’re Tilda Swinton when it means trousers!).  So here are some of my favourites from Palm Springs, Critics Choice and the National Board of review awards, just to  get you in the mood for Sunday’s Golden Globes. And just to prove that sensational dressing is not confined to awards ceremonies, we have the best dresses from the W.E premiere…and Pippa rocking amazing Markus Lupfer. Spoiling you?…Of course, but you are so worth it.

This has to be one of my favourite Pippa looks ever. The Markus Lupfer striped dress is just such a fresh look, even on a cold winter’s day. The dress is available online at Austique.co.uk, and you can get a jumper version from Net-a-porter. These will both set you back more than £200, but you could easily create this look yourself with a mini skirt and thin navy sweater.

Incidentally, Markus Lupfer’s new collection is now available at Liberty, and after spotting this cute knit, I can’t  think of anything more perfect for the never- without-her-sunnies Ms Middleton!

Next up on our stylish rundown is Madonna. I have adored Madonna since 1983, but don’t often rate her style choices. But she looked totally amazing at the W.E. premiere in London this week. I can’t be the only one pleased she has ditched the spandex these days. The black evening dress was from Jean Paul Gaultier and was teamed with a lace Dolce and Gabbana cape. The only thing that jarred was the red gloves, for me they were a bit too theatrical, and maybe a bit too Michael Jackson.

Of course Madonna was not the only glamorous star shining on the red carpet at the W.E. premiere. Wallis herself, Angela Riseborough kept up her run of gorgeous dresses in burgundy Marios Schwab, and Natalie Dormer, who I loved  in ‘Silks’,wore a classic Dolce and Gabbana lace dress.

Fresh from her role as the immortal Marilyn Monroe, Michelle Williams was back to her Mia Farrow best at the Palm Springs Film Festival. This beautiful, embellished dress by Prada is typical Michelle style,understated, elegant and with an early 1960s feel about it. If you see a dress on the red carpet that you think Audrey Hepburn would’ve worn, it’s probably being worn by Michelle.

My current style crush Rooney Mara continues to impress. This Louis Vuitton dress is now my second favourite Rooney look (my first being Prabal Gurung black dream of a dress). Joan Rivers may not be impressed, I laughed out loud when she said ‘That  dragon tattoo girl scares the hell out of me.’, but I think this girl is the Rooney it’s ok to love.

Carey Mulligan was one of the standout stars at the National Board of Review awards. Wearing a Gatsby style fringed dress by Lanvin, I couldn’t help but recall vintage Vionnet styles from the 1920s. I also adore the pastel shades that we are now starting to see on the red carpet. There are some really great pale pinks available in the sale at the moment, so it may be worth snapping them up in a buy now, wear later move.

Another star whose look I loved at the National Board of Review awards was the always interesting Tilda Swinton. Sticking to androgynous tailoring (I’m not sure who designed the outfit, but Haider Ackerman is a favourite of Tilda), she stood out in rich jewelled shades that complimented her alabaster complexion.

Jessica Chastain is another actress who is going to be very busy this awards season after her role in The Help, which  is tipped to win lots of prizes.  She looked sensational at the New York film critics awards in a fluid silver dress by Lyn Devon. This dress was unusual because there was an undertone of neon green. I think this was important in that it made the pale,redhead Jessica avoid looking washed out.

Another star whose red carpet look I adore is Angelina Jolie. She wore Salvatore Ferragamo to the awards, a white silk shirt, teamed with classic leather pencil skirt. This is an understated look which Angelina does so well.Let’s face it, beauty like that requires no buzzers or bells to improve it.
