Style Icons 2013 – Miley Cyrus
It is quite a feat to be named both best and worst dressed star of the year, but in 2013 Miley Cyrus has certainly polarised opinion. The days of Hannah Montana have long since disappeared, as have the boho period and the glamorous Hollywood look that was far too old for a girl barely out of her teens. This has been the year that Miley Cyrus was the name on everyone’s lips, and she made sure her wardrobe would also be a talking point, for both the right and wrong reasons.
Aside from the now infamous ‘twerking’ outfit, which made Miley look nude and encased in a giant condom, I think Miley has made some fabulous style choices this year. She has often looked cool, stylish and age appropriate. Despite the high suggestion of sex appeal, I often find Miley reminding me of Madonna at the period of Papa Don’t Preach, sexy but with a tomboyish air. I love the fact that the current inspiration seems to be coming from the 1990s, with a Kate Moss/Lisa Bruce style dress for the X Factor, and a Marc Jacobs mermaid style for 2013 Night of stars. Her new hairstyle, a 90s style blunt bob is just so Drew Barrymore, with strong Gwen Stefani style make-up completely the strong, glamorous, but always fun look.
Miley’s style may not be to everyone’s taste, but it is never less than interesting, and when she is on-screen it is hard to take your eyes off her. She could simply have continued with her cute cookie cutter style prettiness and been like every other Hollywood starlet, instead she opts for the trouser suit over the evening dress, the catsuit over the beaded mini. Love her or loathe her, she has made a statement and impact this year that has left others standing in her wake. The future looks bright for Miley Cyrus.
