Friday Fashion Focus – Birkenstocks

Iconic brands of footwear? Well, there’s Jimmy Choo’s, Manolo’s, Hunter Wellies, Havainas, Stan Smith’s and Louboutin’s for starters. And, of course, when we are talking about icons of Summer footwear, we really shouldn’t miss out the original sandal that made comfort the number one concern, and won a celebrity following in the process. Of course, I am talking about Birkenstocks.

The company is a German legend. With the original flexible footbed insoles in production since 1896, Birkenstocks are now the sandals to turn to when you need your feet to be comfortable in the Summer months. With their unisex designs and their soft footbeds, Birkies are the sandals that mold themselves to your feet, ensuring that, once you have worn them in, they will be like wearing a pair of slippers. And frankly, who wouldn’t want to be in their slippers all day?

The role call of stylish celebrities who insist on Birkenstocks is like a who’s who from Vogue. Ashley Olsen, Miranda Kerr, Heidi Klum, Drew Barrymore and Alexa Chung are just a few of the ladies who pull out the trusted sandals each Summer, wearing them with everything from jeans and denim shorts, to maxi skirts and dresses. They are totally versatile and there are plenty of styles to choose from, with Jones Bootmaker having a great selection to choose from, including my personal favourite style, the Madrid, along with the Arizona and Gizah varieties.

Celebs in Birkenstocks

Birkenstocks are certainly not the prettiest sandal out there, but for the beach, the school run, running daily errands, even traveling to and from work, there are certainly no sandals more practical, more comfortable or more iconic. If Alexa and Miranda think they are perfect, then who are we to argue the point?

Birkenstocks – The sandals of 2014

When people look back at the summer of 2014 they will see it was the year that the humble Birkenstock made a grand return to the fashion fore. The sandal that has always been known for the levels of comfort and support it provided for the wearer has this year been a bonafide fashion item, as the ‘fugly’ pool slider styles became beloved wardrobe foot fodder of a whole host of fashionable celebs. Style and comfort is a delectable combination, and I have to admit, one that I have succumbed to.

When online shoe brand Shoetique asked if I would like to review something from their Summer collection, I was drawn to the Birkenstocks, even though, in the past, I have had mixed feelings about them. I got my first pair of Birkenstocks in 1999, but had a torrid relationship with them. I went for a single strapped Madrid style in a very pretty pink, but they just weren’t pretty enough for my younger self, and so I rarely wore them.

But fast forward 15 years, and as a mom of an active five year old, constantly on my feet and with the a busy six weeks holiday to look forward to, Birkenstocks now look a far more attractive proposition. And the different celebrities wearing them have shown that they are surprisingly versatile, looking cool with a whole range of outfits. I was more than happy to give them a try.

I once again went for a Madrid, single strap design, just a personal choice as there are also double strap and toe post versions. I was always a fan of 70s Scholl designs, and I think there is some resemblance. I chose a gorgeous red patent colour way. This is now out of stock at Shoetique, but you can still get black patent and a lovely Ice Pearl Onyx design in the current sale. (These are a total bargain now, £31.95!).

With Birkenstocks I would say stick to your usual size, and don’t worry that they appear to be bigger than you would expect. Your feet shouldn’t reach the edges of the shoe, but should instead sit in the foot-bed,  which is leather coated and anatomically formed of cork-latex. This provides support in all the right places. In addition, the sole is built of shock absorbing, textured EVA which means added grip and comfort for your foot.

A country walk in the Birkenstocks

The key to Birkenstocks is to wear them in, they may feel a little strange at first and not instantly comfortable, but once they have moulded to your feet they feel like bliss! Just so comfortable, the sort of thing you can wear, and walk in for hours. I have worn these for the school run, playing football with the little boy and long country walks and am totally sold on them. They are, quite simply, the most comfortable sandals I have ever worn, and will now be a summer staple in my wardrobe.

Summer Sandals

With Summer holidays almost upon us, now is the time to get those tootsie’s pedi-ready and into a pair of stylish sandals. Warm days can lead to hot, swollen feet, especially when they are being pushed into full shoes, especially anything with a heel. Luckily, sandals can now be a smart and stylish option, as well as something that is perfect for casual weekends, and days on the beach.

Choosing the right type of sandal is not always the easiest of tasks. I love toe-post styles and find them easy and comfortable to wear. However, I know a lot of people who hate this style, finding the toe-post uncomfortable and irritating. I find that slip-on types of sandals don’t offer my feet enough support, and yet pool sliders and other one strap sandals are very popular this season. Heels are another consideration. Totally flat options leave my calf muscles aching, so I try to go for a sandal with a small square heel. or even a wedge heel.

Whatever you are looking for in a perfect sandal, you are sure to find it from Spartoo. With stock from Clarks, Melissa, Kickers, Birkenstock and many more famous names, it should be pretty easy to find at least one pair of sandals that addresses your foot’s every need. The only problem may be, that with more than 3,000 pairs to chose from, you may not be able to settle for just one – great news for your feet and wardrobe, not quite so good for you bank balance!
