Reviewed – Clarks Aldwych Wood Boots at Cloggs

Since it was founded in 1979. Cloggs has been a great place to find branded shoes and boots at really great prices. Currently it has a fabulous range of shoes for men, women and children from the likes of Fitflop, Birkenstocks, Converse, Joules and, my personal favourite, a range from Clarks that includes shoes from the iconic Clarks Originals. Recently Cloggs got in touch to see if I would be interested in a review post, and of course, the brand I was drawn to immediately was Clarks.

The Clarks Aldwych Boots are truly the best of both worlds. I have an addiction to suede boots, always buying suede when I need new boots. Unfortunately, as pretty and stylish as suede looks, it is not the most practical of fabrics, particularly when faced with a very wet Winter/Spring like we have been this year. (As I write this, it is raining again.). That is why I love the Aldwych boots design, which incorporates a partial suede upper for a style effect, with more practical and durable leather for the rest of the boot. This boot is just gorgeous, and is a perfect match for a couple of Vivienne Westwood bags I currently have my eye on.

The Aldwych Wood is an ankle boot with a chunky 7cm heel. This makes it easy to walk on and perfect for shopping trips or the school run.  I love the durable rubber sole with Cushion Soft layers, it makes the boot extremely comfortable, even for me (I’m currently suffering with a problem ankle so comfort is extra important.) The zip fastening makes these easy to get on and off, and even when new in the box, the zip wasn’t stiff or hard to move. The boots are fairly true to size, I chose a size 5 and would probably have gone for a half size if available, but these are breaking in nicely for me.

Ankle boots are great in that they are possibly the most versatile of looks. I will always pull these on with jeans or trousers as it is a no brainer, they look great and work so well with pretty much any trouser shape. But I also love this particular boot with a skirt or dress, it toughens up the look and can also give Summer dresses a lease of life for Spring, just add opaque tights and these boots.

The Aldwych Wood boots are currently reduced to £36 from £59.99 so you can get a really big saving at the moment, making these a must buy if you are on the look out for a transitional pair of boots that will last right through Spring, and can be picked up again in Autumn.

Check out the styles at Bells Shoes

Have you checked out the styles at Bells Shoes recently? The company has a proud history, dating back to 1890, when Edward Bell established his first store. It’s online history is a little more recent of course, with online shopping starting in 2007, but its newest website is just a year old and offers a bright shopping experience that is just packed with well known brand names for all the family.

When you look at the brand names that Bells Shoes sell, you are faced with a who’s who of quality shoes. Clarks, Fit Flops, Rieker, Ipanema, Ecco and Gabor are all available, amongst many other brands, showing that the Bells Shoes emphasis is on shoes that offer comfort and durability rather than fast fashion. But that doesn’t mean that the shoes are not fashionable or elegant – in fact, that couldn’t be further from the truth. In the Clarks selection in particular, there are some absolutely gorgeous designs that you know will also be comfortable to wear and will last for ages. When Bells Shoes asked if I would like to review something from their site, it was the Clarks selection I went to straight away.

The Clarks Chorus Thrill are a gorgeous, vintage style Mary Jane shoe that I chose in the navy suede version (who could resist a pair of ‘blue suede shoes’?) The style is reminiscent of shoes worn with flapper dresses in the 1920s, and also the dolly girl style of the 1960s, so could be versatile in terms of what outfits they could be paired with. I love the name ‘Chorus Thrill’, and think this might be linked to the fact they also resemble shoes worn by a Chorus line of dancers, and indeed, with the comfortable t-bar strap and 65mm heel, I think you could wear these to dance the night away and still be standing the next morning.

Inspiration for Chorus Thrill maybe?

One of the things I love about Clarks shoes is the fact that they come in half sizes, meaning I was able to choose my perfect fit, a size 5.5. Delivery of the shoes was very quick, within a day of ordering, which is perfect if you are in a hurry for your shoes, or are just eager to be wearing them. Once the box was opened, I can honestly say I was over the moon with them.

The Chorus Thrill really are a gorgeous pair of shoes. The mixture of soft suede and patent trims makes them visually very appealing, whilst the low heel and concealed platform makes them very comfortable to wear. I think these could be a great work shoe, as they are comfortable enough to wear all day long.

DSCN8714I teamed the shoes with more navy, a M&S shift dress with a slight 1960s feel, but I think these shoes would also be amazing with more clashing shades – hot pink, red or bright yellow. White is also a lovely match for navy, giving a very crisp, clean nautical look. I wore a dress, but would love to see this with wide leg trousers, or city shorts, to create totally different looks.

Family Fever

TM Lewin – the day dress sorted.

Question. You’re off shopping for a new dress. Not a dress for a special occasion or an event, but a dress that would be smart enough to be suitable for work in Summer, or could take you to sport’s day at the kid’s school. Where would be the first place you would look? I’m taking a wild stab in the dark here, but am guessing that the your first port of call wouldn’t be TM Lewin, best known to most of us as the place to find the perfect work-shirts for both men and women. But you would be missing out if you didn’t pay TM Lewin a visit, for they have added some really brilliant day dresses that are strong in design and colour.

I was recently sent the Samantha wrap dress by TM Lewin, and have to admit to being totally shocked that this Diane Von Furstenberg influenced dress was from a brand I most associated with shirts and ties. A geometric print dress, in a glorious lime, white and black print, the Samantha dress is a classic faux wrap style that is very easy to wear, and yet still so chic.

The dress has a wonderful shape, with ruching on the faux wrap which is great if you consider your tummy to be your problem area. The sleeves are very slightly capped but they are not tight so that they cut off the upper arm, but instead make a slight point on the shoulder. The dress has a deep v neckline due to the wrap style, but again, it is not too revealing – I often wear a brooch or a camisole under wrap dresses but this does not need one.

The fabric contains 5% elastane. This gives it a comfortable stretch and helps the dress to keep its fab shape. I also love that this fabric is fully lined – no see-thru bits to keep you blushing.

DSCN7793[1]I teamed my dress with a great 70s style leather sandal from Clarks. The Popple has a wooden heel and lovely strap detail, and I got it in a lovely tan colour. The sandal also comes in a black version, and a different version with more straps (that one is called the Popple Rumba). I love these sorts of retro sandals which are just that little bit dressier than a normal flat flip-flop or toe post design, and can therefore be suitable for work as well as the weekend. I wore this outfit for a day spent in my son’s school watching sports day and a special assembly and felt cool and comfortable, but still smart enough for the occasion.
