Boohoo – My style icon

When I was asked if I would like to take part in the Boohoo.com ‘My Style Icon’ challenge, I was instantly intrigued and interested. Regular readers of this blog know that celebrity style, and getting the celebrity look are areas that I am really interested in. But to actually trying to recreate an outfit myself, from a limited budget of just £30, this was something that I thought would be difficult. Who exactly would I choose as my style icon?

I had to think about this long and hard. I love the style of many varied women. The retro style of Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Marianne Faithfull are all amongst my style faves. Today I would love to delve into the wardrobes of Jessica Alba, Kate Moss, Kate Middleton, Miranda Kerr and Cate Blanchett. But, in the end, I decided to opt for a lady who, like me, is a mother and is also a similar age to me. A lady whose style I have loved since my grungy early 90s period. I’m talking about the one and only Gwen Stefani.

The Look I want to recreate.

df8d35dde63d419c0240244102d0155eI love this glamorous look from Gwen, a classic Studio 54 style jumpsuit, with long hair and Gwen’s trademark red lips. I thought this was a look I would be able to recreate using the Boohoo Plus size range, which has a great collection of catsuits. Although the look wouldn’t be identical, it would at least have the essense of Gwen’s look.

The Plus Gabriella drape side jumpsuit is a rather daring pick for me, the back is low, the sides are low and the front is low. I must admit  will be wearing this with a cami underneath, but I do love it, the slinky, silky fabric is gorgeous, it doesn’t cling, and I feel all Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface in this (another style icon come to think of it.). I couldn’t see Gwen’s shoes, but I know she often opts for simple, but very high stilettos, so that is what I chose (from the clearance section for £8 – but now out of stock.)

Boohoo Plus launch the Nadia Collection

New York based blogger Nadia Aboulhosn is a true icon for the plus size fatshionista. A gorgeous fashion savvy lady, with natural style in abundance, Nadia is witty and down-to-earth, and now counts Lena Dunham amongst her celebrity fans. All this makes her the perfect person to collaborate with Boohoo’s plus size range on their first celebrity/brand fusion.

Nadia is well known for the statement pieces she wears in her Instagram #OOTD posts, and this is what she has created with Boohoo. High fashion pieces for  plus size young women who want to follow and embrace fashion are still a hard thing to find on the UK High Street, so Nadia has looked at fabrics like scuba and styles like sports luxe and 1980s style jumpsuits in order to create a sexy collection with edges of tomboy style. The colour palette is sparse, classic black and white teamed with accents of cobalt blue , and styles are unashamedly form fitting – a total celebration of the body.

The collection launches today, and I think it will polarise opinion. You are either going to love it with a passion, or hate it. For me, I think the collection has some stunning pieces in it – I wouldn’t wear them personally, but this is because I feel they are a little young for me as a forty-something, take off 15 years and I would definitely be investing in lots of the pieces. The jumpsuits are my personal favourite, and I am tempted by the bodysuits, which I think would be fabulous under the pencil skirts I am rather addicted to.

What are your thoughts on the collection – are there any pieces that tempt you?

My hero piece – I absolutely love this jumpsuit, and think Nadia looks just stunning in it.

Boohoo Plus size range just gets better

It is no secret that I’m a real fan of the plus size range that Boohoo introduced late last year. I have quite a few pieces in my wardrobe and they tick a whole lot of boxes. They are well sized – if anything they can be quite generous, they are superbly priced, and the style and quality have both proven to be pretty good. Now Boohoo are further extending the collection, with pretty much anything you need for Autumn/Winter included in the latest collection.

The dress I am reviewing on the blog today is now in the sale, and I would say it is an absolute bargain if you are a dress fan. The Charlotte Mesh inset dress comes in two colour ways, black and a very sweet coral colour, which is the colour I went for, just for a change.  The dress had cap sleeves, a knee length skirt, and a very eye-catching lace/mesh panel. I liked the simplicity of the dress on the website – the neckline took away the problem of finding a necklace, and the length was just right, neither too short or long.

I do like this dress, but must admit that  I wish I had opted for the black, as I think I would probably wear it more. I loved the fact that it was stretchy in a sort of scuba material, this is the sort of dress that just goes on over the head, with no zips or fastenings. The colour is gorgeous, a lovely deep coral shade that contrasts so well with the cream mesh detail.

DSCN9496I do have a couple of issues with the dress though. Firstly, this is not the dress I would wear if I was going out for something to eat – it clings to the stomach a little, so no good for hiding a food baby. Secondly, the beautiful lace panel on the front is a little low for me, it revealed a lot of bra and so I added a vest underneath to spare some of my blushes. But, all in all, I really liked how pretty it was. It was a very different style for me to wear.

The low panel I added a vest to.

I wore this dress for a night at the ballet. It was a lovely warm evening, and so the colour and style seemed just right. I added animal print accessories, and just a large cuff bangle.
