The Alexander McQueen A/W 2011 show at Paris Fashion week was even more anticipated than usual, following frenzied speculation that Sarah Burton may be the designer of the wedding dress of the decade. Although there had been denials by the House of McQueen, news that Vogue editor Alexandra Schulman had personally recommended that Kate Middleton wear a dress by Burton adds weight to the speculation about who will design that dress. Kate and Diana – A tale of two dresses.
This month sees the auctioning off of two very different black dresses. The first dress could be said to have seen the start of a Royal love story, the 2nd a perfect replica of a dress that signified the end of one. Both of the dresses showed the beauty of the women wearing them to its best advantage, and now both sit side by side in Kerry Taylor Auction House as they wait to go to new owners. Lately there has been much talk in the media about Kate Middleton’s recycling of old outfits for official and social occasions, and for her loyalty to the British High Street. Kate has been criticised for using clothes from previous seasons, including that Reiss dress and Whistles blouse, rather than using new designs that could give a boost to the British Fashion industry. She has also faced flack for mainly sticking to High Street brands, albeit High quality ones, rather than opting for a designer option. Even the ever-sensible Vogue editor Alexandra Schulman has waded into the debate, stating in the March issue that she hopes “…the current recession doesn’t drive…
